Velux window story

We have just moved into a rented house and last night, we were all sitting downstairs, there was a huge "bang". One of the skylights had broken, inside pane only. We had only put a mattress in that room, so we couldn't have hit the glass earlier. The heating had been off a while so temperature may have been a factor. On the Velux website, it states that the faulty windows are less than 39cm. This one is wider. I estimate the skylight to be about 12 years old. If it hadn't happened to me, I would never have believed it. I'm sure my landlady won't believe us either. Has anyone had any problems with skylights that are wider than the 39cm?0

I know it's a while since someone posted an exploding Velux window story, but yesterday one of ours imploded. Ours was fitted in 2002 or 3 , do you know if Velux will replace it or will we have to claim on our insurance. The window is not one of the size that the Product Warning was issued for. I'm going to phone Velux tomorrow, they are just down the road from us in Fife and I have my fingers crossed for a good result.0

FIL had his Velux shatter last year. It was fitted about 12 years before this. Velux said it was outside any guarantee period. I advised FIL to challenge the decision, quoting the known history of problems. There was then no quibbling - a new sealed unit was fitted FOC within a couple of days.
Full marks to Velux for Customer Support and product back up!0 -
The inner pane on our Velux shattered a week ago during the cold weather but the company are refusing to replace it FOC as our window type was not on their recall list (CO2, CO4, MO4) and is outside the guarantee period, despite clearly suffering the same flaw. Who would it be best to challenge this, with the company itself or a third party?0

My 80 year old mum's 14 year old velux inner pane just shattered. I fould out while dealing with it that the windows in our house (including 2 8 ft above where I stand and work) are the same model as the ones affected. I called and they are replacing our 4 GGL CO4 windows FOC and THEY DIDNT ASK WHEN THEY WERE INSTALLED. that means this problem affects a wider range of windows than those manufactured between 1997 and 2003!
I would have never have known unless my Mum's window exploded and I stand 6 ft under an at risk window every day.0 -
We went to put the Christmas decs away in the attic and found the inner panes in one of the windows had shattered. I vaguely remembered a recall story so looked it up and found the details. DH rang velux whose immediate concern was whether it was secure and if not they would send someone round. They then arranged to replace the damaged window. They came yesterday and replaced 3 windows despite no damage to the others and said if we had any trouble with a 4th which is relatively inaccessible to call them and they would replace that too. Ours were put in in 2003 (not by them)! Can’t fault their customer service.Mortgage, we're getting there with the end in sight £6587 07/23, otherwise free of the debt thanks to MSE help!0
