Velux window story

Have to say, reasons notwithstanding (differential glass strengths either side of thermal void) we had an excellent response on repairing a broken inner pane in our Velux rooflight FOC.
The fact that Velux also voluntarily replaced the glazed units in all 6 of our other Velux rooflights, some in excess of 8 years old, is a highly commendable service not often seen the construction sector supply chain.
Dont hesitate to contact them if you have this issue 01592 778 2250 -
Just to update, VELUX came out and replaced FOC & offered to cover cost of emergency repair. 10/10 for customer service. My posts are my opinion which is neither right nor wrong.0

My name is Jacqueline Dalziel and I work for the VELUX Company. I would like to thank everyone who has taken the time to inform VELUX of their experience of pane breakage.
We take the quality of our products seriously and have decided to issue a product warning to inform our customers we have registered a level of spontaneous glass breakage in a specific type of small pane.
The pane codes affected are only those with the reference 00UE, 59 or 34, in combination with the number 8 or the letter Y. The size of the pane is 39cm/15.5 inches or less. These panes were produced and sold between 1997 and 2003.
Under specific conditions, generally experienced in the winter, there is a minor risk that the inner glass may break spontaneously, with the possibility of glass fragments falling.
To determine whether your pane is affected please visit our website or alternatively you can call the VELUX Product Warning Help Line on 0800 980 7030 (UK) or 1800 509 628 (Ireland).
If your pane is affected VELUX will replace the pane ex-gratia (free) and provide options for installation.
We recommend that you act on this warning and apologise for any inconvenience this may cause.0 -
Hi as a new blogger I was unable to attach the links to the VELUX web site. The VELUX Product Warning website details for UK and Ireland are as follows velux-pw.co.uk or velux-pw.ie (just add www)

In late spring, 2011, one of our Velux windows did exactly what is being reported here. The window is 19 years old, so I'm not sure it had Argon. My son was home when the stationary Velux in the cathedral ceiling (a full second storey high over our foyer) exploded. Again, it was the interior piece of glass only. Months later, after several sweep ups, I still cannot go barefooted in the hallway because little shards keep appearing and will cut through the skin if walked on with normal weight. We reported this to contractors and the window company that supplied 2 such Velux windows and nobody knows anything about this phenomenon. So, thank you, thank you for reporting this so that we have some weight behind our requests for replacement. I will certainly have our second window checked out and will report back here the results.
Also, I just noticed this is a UK site. We are in Vermont, US. I haven't found such reports here in the US and when I find who to contact in the States will pass the info along in case other US residents find this forum.0 -

So glad to have found this thread! One of my two velux windows exploding this morning and I had no idea why. Found this thread, looked at Velux's website and spoke to them and they are sending someone out to replace both windows (even the one that hasn't broken) as soon as possible. Unfortunately, it my not be until 1st March but they did say that if we can find someone local to fix it, they will send the glass out. But I'm happier than I was when it first exploded!0

Thanks for this - same happened to my bathroom velux window at 4.30 this morning - spontaneously shattered. Have called Velux on 0800 980 7030 after finding their product warning page for this issue on their website. It affects windows made and sold between 1997-2003. My house was built in 2002 and they asked no further questions. They're getting someone out to fix it and tesT my other 3 windows whilE they're at it.0

Update: Velux have just called me back only 2 hours after reporting the shattering and they are sending an engineer out to fix the window on 17th Feb. I asked about making the window safe between now and then (still have shards hanging off it) - Sheila at Velux said that if I get it boarded up they'll refund the fees. an coming to do just that tomorrow.0
