Hi,
A friend has just told me that it is possible for someone else to retrieve your voicemail messages from their own phone!
has anybody else heard this? Is it true?
quite worrying if it is!
Thanks for your help

they would need to know your PIN number0

Thank you for your reply. I am not up on techno stuff but does everybody have to put in a pin to retrieve their own messages?
I don't use the facility but am asking on behalf of my boss.
Thanks0 -
Most mobile phone networks set their own default PIN's; you need a PIN to retrieve messages if you are retrieving messages from a phone other than your mobile phone.
I'm with O2 and if I dial my mobile number from another phone and then press # when the answerphone cuts in; it takes me to the voicemail retrieval.
You should change the default PIN to your own personal number to prevent anyone accessing your voicemails.I have the mind of a criminal genius. I keep it in the freezer next to Mother....0 -

A PIN is not necessary to retrieve voicemail messages when calling in from the registered account / handset.
The voicemail user options menu will usually allow you to set up a PIN so that you can call in from any phone and access your messages. This is also necessary to access your messages whilst roaming abroad.0 -
And if going abroad, you'd need a PIN number even from your own phone.0

You can just call the Voicemail number and spoof the CLI info, though that is probably illegal, but it is doable. The systems that run the mobile networks are also venerable to unauthorised access to the files on the servers. Also ESN cloning will grant access.

This other stuff is off topic please post in the I WANT TO DO IT Forum if commenting on stuff below...
Not that easy to do but Voicemail is not that secure.
Neither is most WIFI 10 minutes to break most WIFI.
And neither is HTTPS / SSL from public WIFI Spot, your proxy can man in the middle.
Like getting an Admin account on a Window XP, 200x box a bit off effort (5 minutes, Boot of a CD for the version of Windows to install, select mass storage driver (runs in ring0) and then install your code to read, copy and replace the password files SAMS. Reboot and you are in. Repeat to restore the original passwords and your are done, no trace of what you did!) but possible.Seth.0
