It looks like i was lied to when i rang Sky initially.
They have replied to an email i sent,here is their answer,
Thank you for your e-mail regarding your account.
I can confirm that Freesat customers with a Sky+ box can subscribe to Sky+ recording without taking a viewing package. You would need to pay the 10.00 (GBP) monthly recording fee in order to utilise the special functions of the Sky+ box.
