  • Hi Kremmen,

This can be a tough question to answer. But, two solutions come to my mind.

    1. You can do a direct copy of all your software from one hard drive to another.

    Advantages:
You retain an exact duplicate of all the information and can use your older hard drive as a backup hard drive. There will be no need for formatting your existing information.

    Disadvantages:
If you have an older operating system, this system will get copied to your new hard drive, and could make your overall performance with your new computer a very unpleasent one.

To perform a duplication, you should get some software from the internet like Norton Ghost or PowerQuest's Drive Image, if you're willing to spend, to make an exact copy.

    2. If you've bought software from the internet, chances are that you can go back and using your log in information, download another copy of the softwares you use.

    Advantages:
You maintain the quick performance of your new computer by removing all things that might have "accidently" appeared on your old computer.

    Disadvantages:
You have to copy all your other documents manually and any settings folders.

To do this, you have to go to your software manufacturer's website and download the programs and install them again. As for backing up the settings and all other documents, this might require some investigative work, which can begin right here: http://www.microsoft.com/technet/prodtechnol/winxppro/deploy/mgrtfset.mspx

    All the best!

You can put the files onto a CD if you have a CDwriter, You will have to Burn
the files to CD to make a copy of them just like you would do if you backed up
any files (well I hope you have backed up work) anyway you will have to find the files
and then put them on disk.

An even easier option is to get a USB Pen (flash) Drive and drag and drop the files
onto the USB Drive, this maybe be tricky with Win98..

Put it this way there are a load of options.

Thanks to you both for your replies...I see I have a few choices.
At least I know where to start.
I do have a USB pen and the link will prove helpfull.

    Fingers crossed.

  • I'm not sure if I've missed something here, but I would have thought that the "Files and Settings Transfer Wizard" built into Windows XP would have been the easier option

I have missed something here haven't I

You can do it that way, but I think on disc or USB or some kind of media is better because then you have a hard copy, and save confusing CAT5 cables issues that some peeps get a bit worried about... so I think its ok to leave that option out of the loop for a novice.

I've got some files on an old PC running Windows 95 that I'd like to transfer onto my existing PC running Windows XP Home. The old machine does have USB ports but they are not enabled and I'm not sure that the version of Win95 I have can use USB. No CD writer in old machine. I do have a laplink parallel cable but not the software.

What would be the easiest inexpensive way of transferring files (aside from floppies)

Jeez ere maybe zipping the files and password protect them and email them to yourself and then setup new PC then chesk the email on the new PC.

Or upload to somewhere,,,, are you on Broad Band as then the above will be an option.
  • Ever get the feeling you are wasting your time?
