Just-Dial, 1899 etc from a Telewest line?

Thank you both for your helpful advice. I have tried a different landline phone in the socket and no joy, so it would appear you are most likely to be right about it being Telewest's fault (there have been no extensions wired in anywhere here). With this in mind, there is a Telewest techy coming tomorrow morning, will let you know the outcome in case anyone else experiences this.. Thanks again.0

And when he/she arrives, don't bother mentioning your attempt to use 1899 (or their 0808 cable landline access number) - that can have had no effect whatsoever on the line and, in any case, is perfectly legal and none of TW's business.Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.0

Well, thanks everyone for the 'consumers all together' advice, it was a great support and gave me confidence in dealing with Telewest. Techy arrived this morning, and surprise surprise, you were right! It was a fault with their wiring. Hopefully all problems ironed out now, and my next plan is to purchase an orchid dialler... hurray!0

I'm on Telewest, but have recently signed up with 1899. Can't believe the difference in cost and I'm only a 'light user'. Calls using 1899 in first week cost 60p according to their itemised on-line statement, but I have calculated same calls if made through Telewest would have been £2.72. Have recommended to all family and they too are amazed at difference. Now that I've seen benefits will be buying an autodialler to make things easier. We occasionally make calls to Netherlands and cost seems to be 10% of Telewest charge.0

Thanks. I've used this site. Problem has been that as I'm a very light user and make use of Telewest's free weekend calls included in phone package, calls using 1899 don't come to very much. I've noticed in the small print of some other suppliers that they will cancel your service if you spend less than £1 a month.0
