council housing problems

Seasons greetings to everyone!!!!!

Me my wife and my 10 year old daughter rent a cottage from a local estate, the rent has recently gone up,and after alot of number crunching we can no longer afford to stay here..it is just beyond our budget.

We dont earn enough to buy a property.

We contacted the local council, and they were hopeless, because we are not homeless they cannot help us,and even if he could help us there is a 8 year waiting list for council housing!!!!!

I have paid into the system for 23 years..what for???? i have never claimed benefits, very rarely used the national health service(touch wood) why bother??

I am seriously thinking of moving to Malta where i have family

This once great country is now the laughing stock of the world

Do you think thats why so many people are dying to come and live here?

I don't agree with you about us being a laughing stock, but maybe you could get yourself on the council housing list although its probable that your young daughter will be grown by the time you got to the top of the list unfortunatly and in the mean time rent somewhere cheaper... I really don't think things are very different to how they were 40yrs ago when my parents waited on a council waiting list for 21yrs for a council property...

Good luck whatever you decide to do...

Well if you are renting the cheapest then you will just have to either reduce your other outgoings or increase your income.

The other alternative is if you believe you and your family would have a better standard of living in Malta why not move??

  • Bad situation for you to be in,

Are you making sure your getting all the assistance your entitled too?

what about working tax credits for example? I believe many people who are entitled to them, dont know.

Other than that are you good tenants? can you explain your struggling to meet the rent and will have to move out, would they care? good tennents are not that easy to find. Can you do anything for them in lieu of payment?

    Try CAB for more advise.

Making comments like this will not help your situation. Why don't you post your information in the DFW forum and see how people can help?

Ask not what your country can do for you, ask what you can do for your country.

More importantly, what actions have you taken to improve your situation?
    Been away for a while.
  • Ok so if you work full time on min wage that's a monthly income of £931 a month before tax so you are looking at a net of around £750, if your wife works aswell and earns the same you have a monthly income of £1500, if she doesn't work, you should get enough benefits on that amount of income to bump your monthly income to around £1500 mark anyway (housing benefit/Council tax benefit/wtc/ctc/chb etc

It would really help if you could explain a bit more about your income and expenditure and yes perhaps post on the DFW board to look at wasy of increasing your income/cutting your outgoings

What makes you think if you had a council property your rent would be any less than £410 a month?
