naughty m&s

before I get my hands slapped, im sorry if this is in the wrong place and feel free to move if it is!

beware when you are returning items to M&S with gift receipts as I found earlier today!
I received a cardigan for xmas (which my hubby told me should of been 49.50 but with 30% off knitwear offer was 33.60) I wanted to return it so took it back to the M & S store today with the gift receipt and the credit voucher I received was for 32.89 ???

when I asked why I wasnt refunded the 33.60 I was told by the assistant(who was pig ignorant I might add) that it was because of the vat adjustment.... I accepted that it must be right and there was a huge queue so I left it at that.
when I got outside to my hubby and told him, he had a rummage in his wallet and found the original receipt and it was 33.60 that he paid!!! so I went marching staight back in to her and told her that she hadnt credited the full amount!
she wasnt very happy about it and made me feel like I was doing something wrong!! I know its only pence but its better in my pocket than M&S and it makes me wonder how many people they've done that to and got away with it! that would be a nice little earner!

This should be on the vent board but someone will move it soon.

If your OH had the receipt in his pocket, why didn't you take it with you from the start?

One to watch out for though! I bet they aren't the only store doing this.

I took some stuff back just before Christmas which I had bought from Per Una at 30% off plus the VAT adjustment. There were other things on my receipt so I couldn't work it out there and then but I did query that she wasn't giving me the proper amount back. She said, very disdainfully, it's not me, it's the till, it's working it out so it must be right! I didn't agree but there was a big queue and it is difficult to work it out because of the other items. It's only pence but the principle is there, better in my pocket than M & S's. I will check it again now and get my maths minded husband to try and work it out. It's a very complicated matter but I feel we are getting ripped off with this lot. My daughter had to really insist that she was given the right amount (this was not at M & S)as the till had worked it out at 50-odd pence less than she had paid. What's going on, are they making little profits out of many people which will help their profits?
  • he gave me the gift receipt as it was a gift.... I guess so that I could get a credit note and then buy something whenever I wanted to as opposed to waiting till he was with me cos it wouldve been refunded to his card! you know what its like ... you never get it then! lol
  • Thanks for the post. My OH bought me a cardi for xmas (maybe it's the same one:rotfl: ) which doesn't fit so i have to take it back with a gift receipt. I will take in the original receipt just in case.
I like my money right where I can see it - hanging in my closet.;)
  • I thought that if you had the original reciept ( and it was bought with a card) but not the card it was bought with, you got gift vouchers.
  • The original receipt will show the VAT adjustment at the bottom of the receipt along with any other savings as do any Tesco receipts so the "pig ignorant" sales assistant is quite correct, the till will automatically work it out.

When one reads such as " I was told by the assistant(who was pig ignorant I might add) ..........You can ony wonder what adjectives woud be applied to someone who uses such dialogue!

Kind of defeats the whole object of having a gift receipt if you have to produce the original one to prove how much you paid.

Well, best solution would be to take a calculator in with you and work out the VAT discrepancy in front of the SA, thus demonstrating how non-pig ignorant you yourself are. I'm sure she'd be impressed and take your word for it rather than what the till said.
    Val.
  • I returned some things to m and s before christmas after the vat change but they were bought before the vat reduction and the till did work it out wrongly, but the fellow at the till adjusted it without me saying so.
