Gas - Billed as metric but meter is Imperial

Just logged on to see if I've managed to reduce my Gas consumption against previous bills and now a bit worried.

Yes, we're using less gas but the bills are giving XXX metric used in XX days but on the front of my meter it has ft3.

Our meter is read regularly both by us and their own readers, but what does this mean for our bills ? Should I flag it up ? We're struggling to pay our DD, hence my trying to monitor and reduce our consumption. Just worried it's now going to be even more expensive.

They probably know and convert the readings to metric. It might be shown on the bill.

I think it is about 12cu ft to 1 cu Meter so if it is wrong you would have an enormous bill
I used to be indecisive but now I am not sure.

Your meter units are converted into kwh on your bill.
Can you post one of the calculations on your bill, that is where they have a number of units and the kwh figure they convert that to.
For an imperial meter like yours, one unit which equals 100 cu feet should be approx 31.5 kwh.

09 Sep 2008 - actual 2941 We read your meter
30 Nov 2008 - actual 3053 You gave us your meter reading
    = 112 metric units over 83 days

Gas units converted = 3531.19 kWh used over 83 days

    Usage charge
    First 609.00 kWh x 7.259 p = £ 44.21
    Next 2922.19 kWh x 3.688 p = £ 107.77
    £ 151.98

Gas units are converted to Kilowatt hours using the following formula:
metric units used x calorific value x volume correction x to convert to kWh x gas used expressed in kWh
    112 x 39.2192 x 1.0226400 ÷ 3.6 = 3531.19

If your meter is imperial, we multiply your units by 2.83 to convert to metric.

Lifted straight off my online acc' - does this help ?

Hi mggirl, You are being billed correctly for an imperial meter (cu ft)
The 112 imperial units do in fact convert to 3531 kwh, to convert you multiply the units by approx 31.5.
However the bill is very confusing, why they say 112 metric units I do not know, because from what you say they are imperial units.
Also the sum I have highlighted does not equal 3531, to equal that it must be multiplied by 2.83 to convert to metric.
I do not think you have anything to worry about.

    Phew !

Thanks for looking over it. Still scary how much we pay, but at least it's right.

My latest online British Gas bill is much the same, stating that my meter readings are in metric, where as they are actually in imperial. As notbritishgas explains though, the actual calculations and amount billed is correct.
  • Hi can some one tell me how much my gas bill would be as npower are charging me in metic saying i had a new meter fitted in 2008 and i never did. so its an old imperial with f3 on the front!! Will i owe loads?? or is this there mistake
reading in sept was 2760 and now its 3054.
Please can some help as this is there fault not mine.Where do i stand?

Why on earth use the word "metric" for the difference in meter readings?! It's bound to cause confusion. Better would be "metered" IMHO. TBH I despair of the low proper use of our language by large organisations.

    Welcome to the forum.

You have used 294 gas units. An Imperial gas unit is approx 31.5kWh and a Metric gas unit is approx 11.2kWk

As your meter is an Imperial(cubic feet) meter Npower should be billing you for approx 9,261 kWh for those gas units.

If they believe you now have a Metric meter they will bill you for 3,293kWh

If this is the case you will owe them around £180 for that period.

However when did they start billing you for a metric meter?

Metric gas units is exactly the correct terminology. There are metric gas units and Imperial gas units; the latter being 2.83 times larger than the former!
