kids have a WII and Xbox 360 elite but...

We had no idea both grandparents would get these!! However, there are additional costs i beleive...

Thw WII has been set up on wireless. (I beleive anyway) Well we can get onto the WII shop to buy games at so many points. (I thought it meant you could use the likes of google) So firstly, how do you get these points to buy stuff? Can i buy them online? Are they cheap? Are there bundles etc? Secondly, or should that be fifthly?? How much can be stored on the WII presuming once i "buy" the game its saved forever...

Anything else i need to know about the WII? Or an idiots guide online??

Then there is this Xbox 360. Its elite and has something like 120 of memory. Too much if you ask me, but hey...What we didnt know was we need to purchase an internet wireles adaptor type thing. So off to buy one later. Kids already seem to enjoy it, i cany even load a game! Its that difficult to understand!! Once we get the wireless thing, can we use the likes of google? Now i have been told there are two "services" Silver which i beleive is free. You cant downlaod games or that just browse? And Gold which costs. Can someone detail the differences please? And where do i buy such membership? Is it expensive? Are there sites which offer better rates?

I really appreciate your help, pc knowledge was never my thing.

you can buy wii points from most places that sell the Wii, 2000 points for about £15. As for storage, the wii only has 512mb internal, you can insert SD memory cards to exapnd it. the games u download are not very big in size.

The browser on the Wii is called Opera, was free when it first came out not sure now though.

As for Xbox live, only real difference between gold and silver is Gold allows you to play against other player online, eveything else you can do with silver, shame u didnt know before xmas, as wireless controller was only 32.99 in some places. You can use a Cat 5 cable to attach Xbox to the router.

...or alternatively, you don't let the kids play on-line games and stuff !! We have a PS3, xbox360 and Wii, but the only one that's been on-line is the PS3 as this doesn't cost you anything and uses your normal BB connection..you don't HAVE to use every feature on the things...

The points are mainly used to buy older games. And yes you would need the same game to play against online players

As for browsing the web on Xbox 360, NO. There is a way, but lot of messing about, so just easier to use Pc.

  • Ok getting my head round this slowly. So basically the only difference between the gold and silver membership is with gold you can play other people online say at wwe wrestling? Hmmm dont think i will bother. Will justuse the free silver service. Can still buy points tho cant i? Is it cheaper to buy from microsoft directly or use Game etc? Was £17.50 there. Dont wanna use ebay, dont trust it lol.
Just read i can d.load games which you say are older games, thats ok. What about tv shows and movies, it says i can get them? Is there a site that tells me what ones i can get before buying the product?

Yes you can still buy points and dowload the free deoms and buy stuff with the points. Yeah avoid ebay, too many fakes. Xbox points tend to be the same price from most places (as microsoft control the prices) .

As for downloading films or tv shows, u have to buy through video marketplace, which is from microsfot, so very limited to what u can buy, and some of the films you can only rent for about 560 coins. Personally i dont bother with the poins, much easier to buy the films from other places and cheaper.

Basically, the Wii & Xbox 360 are games machines, U can use 360 as a media centre, store all ur songs, pctures and movies on there.

  • I like the idea of saving music, pics etc on the xbox. Just how do i go about it tho?

Just set up the wireless and it mentioned about the pc. On the xbox site and it says i can play movies on windows media player 11 in the bedroom based pc and watch it on living room based xbox. However can i set it up to only show one or two selected movies or would it show all my video collection? Some horror ones the kids cant see...
  • Ok so i am as far as setting up the sharing of files in WMP. Went into Library, then media sharing and it should show xbox 360 to share with however it doesnt. Any idea why?

Xbox has a usb slot on the back, plug a flash drive, external drive, mp3 player, portable media player, put ur pics or music on any of them, go to My Xbox, scroll across to music or pics and it will show portable device.

As for streaming media to a pc, there is setup guide at https://www.xbox.com/pcsetup. Are you running XP or Vista on your PC.

As for what video it would show i am not sure, may have to set up some guide of parental controls on media player if you can
