How to work out Nursery Fees

As the title says really. I'm confused. DS has been in nursery doing just one morning a week (every week inc school holidays etc)at a cost of £21.50. He was 3 in October and will be going to school nursery in January and staying at the private nursery, so I will be splitting his free government place.

He will be doing just Wednesday and Thursday at the private one. Each day will be 8.30 til 1.00. I only pay for a portion of these days as I receive 2.5hrs free for each day as part of the government funding. During the school holidays the Thursday session will be knocked on the head but will stay on the Wednesday session still. (Wed for 52 weeks and Thurs 34 weeks-school term)

I have asked the nursery to work out what they need the direct debit to be set up for rather than paying cash each month, They have come back with a figure of £28.70 per week, so times that by 52 divide by 12 = £124.37.

I just want to know how they work out the original weekly figure of £28.70 per week so I know for future reference how to work it out so that I make sure I am paying the correct amount.

Sorry if this is a bit jumbled but I think I have typed it ok. I would appreciate any help.

I've no experience of this as such, but would they add up what it would be for the year, minus any deductions (gov funding), and then divide by 12 giving you a monthly payment??? Only a thought might be completely wrong maths isn't my forte! Hopefully someone else will be along soon with better help :)

Over the year, you'll pay for 52 wednesdays @ 2 hours (104 hours), and 34 thursdays @ 2 hours (68 hours), giving a total of 172 hours. Divide by 52 weeks = 3.31 hours per week OR divide by 12 months = 14.33 hours per month.

Do you pay £21.50 for a session, or is that the cost before funding? Sorry, my kids are older and I have no idea what nursery prices are now :D

  • You will get funding for 38 weeks of the year which complicates the maths further. Do you have to pay for 52 weeks of the year or is xmas a free week because he doesn't attend? Are they charging you for 2 sessions all year? I thought it was normal for a nursery to do so?

There isn't as far as I'm aware a set amount the nursery claim. It is more that they say we charge £x an hour and so claim for 2 1/2 hours. You can't just divide the session fee by 4.5 hours because there may well be a fee for a snack in there. Roughly speaking the nursery funding is typically £8.80 an hour.

Your maths work out that you must be paying for his place all year. I hope you were expecting that.

    Actual cost to you is £28.70 x 52 =£1,492.42 for 86 sessions.
Less £301 for full cost Wednesday sessions = £1,191.42
£1,191.42 divided by 72 part funded sessions = £16.55 a session cost to you so the Gov is contributing £4.95 that doesn't sound anywhere near enough.

But if you were paying for his place all year then the maths looks like this
    Actual cost to you is £28.70 x 52 =£1,492.42 for 86 sessions.
Less £602 for full cost sessions = £890.42
£890.42 divided by 72 part funded sessions =£12.37 which is what you pay
£21.50 session cost less £12.37 your payment = £9.13 Gov contribution which sounds about right.

Please feel free to tell me If I made a mistake I only got 4 hours sleep last night :)

Gosh I'm really confused by it all you tell you the truth. I just wanted someone to say if this all sounded ok. I will ask them again to give me a written breakdown of how it is worked out. I have before but it was never forcoming.

At the moment I do pay £21.50 for wednesdays only and is before any funding. With me having the funding from next year I will be able to afford for him to go for an extra morning.

I havent a clue if I'm paying for a place all year. He will attend Wednesdays all year (52 weeks) but not for the Thursday one as this would have to be term time only as I couldn't afford this one during holidays as I would have to pay for the full morning.

Just to say I don't know if its the same in all local authorities but in ours, if your child goes to a school nursery they cannot receive any free sessions in a private nursery. All the Nursery Education Grant funding goes to the school. However it may be different in your area.
  • the form i have to fill out lets you fill in details for more than 1 provider. At the nursery our DD goes to they work it out month on month so it is never the same depending on how many weeks in the month (she goes 3 days a week). I never understand our bills so just hope they are right! I have no idea how they work it out into hours!

Have you told the nursery this? If it's a private nursery, I'm not sure they will be happy with that; your child would be losing them money as they'd have a part-timer preventing another child from attending all year round, iyswim.

It all goes to the school only if the child is doing 5 sessions at the school. If not it can be split between different providers.

I don't think the nursery will mind as they are charging for 52 weeks of the year and he's only attending 34 of them.
