Smart Defrag

Would like the experts on the forum opinions of this please...

Seems to do a lot more than my current defragger from Auslogics...

and it's freeware as well.

  • I personally use Window's built in defragmenter but I've heard good things for:

    PerfectDisk
    Diskeeper Home/Pro
    O&O Defrag Pro
    JKDefrag

Afraid I can't comment on Smart Defrag.

I suspect defragging is over-rated. When I've tried out a couple of programs I noticed they were mostly moving Temporary Internet Files about; stopping the defrag and deleting these instead suddenly meant defragging was no longer recommended

    I use DEFRAGGLER personally.
The problem with Vistas inbuilt one and the IO one (if used as theyre making out) is they run ALL THE TIME (Or when idle)
This has virtually zero effect to the speed and all its doing is wearing the drive out by its constant use.
Use a decnt defrag program, like defraggler -
    http://www.filehippo.com/download_defraggler/
Once every couple of months or so to keep on top of things (And keep the drive happier :p)
It does a much better job at defragging than Vistas inbuilt one too (In fact all that ive tried)

    Absolutely
Run CCLEANER before defragging to remove all the 'junk' first

Smart Defrag, by default, wants to install the Yahoo! Toolbar! and to make Yahoo! the Default! Search! Engine! - but you can untick the boxes.

And you cannot change the (rather small) window size - unlike Defraggler...

The Analyse phase takes about twice as long as Defraggler on my PC.

Just switched this feature in Smart Defrag OFF.

"It can defrag several drives including partitions simultaneously"
"Lets you set up a schedule for defragging your hard drive"
"The ability to shut down your computer when it's finished"

    Very impressive....
    however....
downloaded this on 23th let it analyze my C drive and it told me i needed to run the Defrag and Optimize feature.
Set it up to do this overnight ..shutting the pc down when it had finisned ...
    ...which it did.

A few hours ago analyzed my C drive again.....
thought i would get the thumbs up...:D

It told i had to run Defrag and Optimize again

In IOBits Smart Defrag, the Defrag and Optimize option scans files to see what the most popular accessed ones are and the most modified ones are. It then re-arranges them on the HDD to speed up access for the most accessed and sticks the most modified ones to the end to help reduce fragmentation. It has nothing to do with "temp files and wotnot".

FWIW Smart defrag is quite good. Certainly after trying it for a month and having it running in the background, Diskeeper couldn't find anything worth doing.

I completely agree the program is a good one Conor
I just dont think its worth running all the time.
Id say monthly at best. The minute speed increases (Which would be absolutely undetectable anyways) are not worth the drive usage IMHO

  • Just one more quick question regarding defragging your pc...

    whatever program you use...

is it better to defrag in safe mode?
