maybe it was just bournemouth? there were a fair amount of people out but we only had to queue once the whole morning we were out and we bought in about 10 seperate places.

There was plenty left in Monsoon too, thats another place its size 18 or nothing day after the sales start usually.
 Well aint funny how its the little things in life that mean the most? Not where you live, the car you drive or the price tag on your clothes.
Theres no dollar sign on piece of mind
    This Ive come to know...
So if you agree have a drink with me, raise your glasses for a toast
  • I had a VIP slot online for the NEXT sale and ordered a fair bit of stuff, but as you say, do I really need it? So I tried it all on, decided I wouldn't have bought it at full price, so not much point buying it at half price either. Only thing I was swayed by was a jumper reduced to £5, but then remembered I had bought one very similar in Matalan just before Christmas, so all of that will be going back. I have got some things for my daughter to try on ( including a Nike tracksuit reduced from £44 to £12) which I will keep if she likes them as she is growing and needs new clothes. Other than that someone else is welcome to the stuff I don't need!

We have one costa coffee and another opening in essentially a Market town near Woolworths which is a sh1tty end of a tarted precinct. Also there are others Starbucks and another I don't remember the name, never been in any nor never likely too. Will these survive ?

central London is absolutely packed with chain coffee shops - I reckon that within 10 minutes' walk of my Chambers, there are something like 20 of them. Can't imagine they will all be there in a year's time.

I have noticed on this board (and others) that people have different spending priorities.
No one type is more virtuous than the other (though you wouldn't think that when one reads some of the posts).
    .

I agree with that - our priorities are more doing things rather than owning things. Nothing wrong with chosing electronic stuff, say, over more holidays. The problem comes when you choose to buy lots of electronic stuff, organic grub, nice clothes, new cars and lots of holidays, without quite having the cash to do it.

You may be right, but I doubt the reason for some of those shops closing down will be the same as that for other retailers that are currently in trouble. I doubt credit insurance will be too much of an issue for coffee shops, simply because they don't exactly do much by way of reselling. What might end up killing them is the fixed costs that they may not be able to make up from a dwindling business. My guess is though that they will still try and drop their margins, introduce 'Lite' versions on their menus and try to ride it through.

That is so true. I bought a PS3 a couple of weeks back, and decided not to venture out during the Boxing day sales... and mind you, by my standards, that is quite an achievement, as I don't seem to be able to keep myself away from a PC World, Currys, Comet et al, the latest craze being Apple products.

And I can't really afford the supreme virtuousness of the organic brigade. I try my best to buy fair trade clothes that suit me.

M & S do some basic cotton T shirts and tops for under a tenner, made from fairtrade cotton.

  • In the main though, sales are utter bull. You'll save more in the long run by trying to be as savvy a consumer as possible the whole year round.

And get to enjoy a relaxed Boxing Day with your family / mates / on your own, to boot!

    the opening paragraph is great:

Fly back with me to the Labour Party conference of 2003 and Chancellor Brown's speech. He promised never to “abandon fiscal responsibility or set aside economic discipline”, to “meet and master the next wave of global economic change”, to cut back central bureaucracy and national debt - no, too sad, too cruel, I can't go on.

I have never, even bought anything on Boxing Day, apart from the odd pint of milk. It's quite a long way from my parents' house in the middle of nowhere to shops, and I'd rather be in bed at 5am or whatever crazy time of day the sales start!
