Pocket money (merged)

I don't think an "average" figure is all that useful.
When I was 15 (I'm now in my 30s) I was getting £200 per month pocket money. However, I lived quite a long way away from my school, and that money paid for my transport and my school lunches. If my parents had been paying for my transport directly, I'd have got a lot less pocket money!0 -
Thanks everyone, slightly varying amounts.
Ideally i would like him to get a job,but this is proving difficult.
Do your children do chores for there pocket money?
YORKSHIRELASS- Obviously yours do and i certainly do not give him something for nothing.0 -
We give our (very nearly!) 14 year old £20 a month which goes straight into her bank and we pay £10 a month for her phone. She has to keep her room tidy and give it a good clean once a week or so, do the recycling and feed the rabbit and guinea pig. Her Granddad gives her £20 a month too, but that's "performance related" as he calls it - she's expected to knuckle down at school and stuff for that. Our rule is 'we will buy you what you NEED, but what you WANT you buy yourself', and it works pretty well! If she wants to earn a bit extra (she's saving for her hols at the moment) then we have a list of jobs and what we'll give her for doing them. Special trips with friends like the cinema or bowling we'll pay for, but they're only every so often so we don't mind treating her!0

Having just spoken to DH, i think we are in agreement that we will give him £5 a week,£10 a month into his bank account and pay for his phone£15. He will still do his normal chores but also hoover and cut the grass once a week. We will pay for any 'needs' and he has to pay for any 'wants'
What do you think?0 -
My 15 yr old ds has a paper round and earns £22 a week so I don't give him pocket money. However I do pay for essentials including bus fares for school, school trips and his clothes though I have just agreed to pay £10 a month into his bank account so that he can buy the clothes that he wants and I will buy him the ones that he needs. He has to top this up if he wants designer brands as I refuse to pay for those. I pay £12 a month for his contact lenses though I claim most of that back from my health cash plan
. He pays for his preferred toiletries, mobile, trips out (unless it's a family one) and saves up for any big purchases that he wants.

I am trying to find him a job, but i do like what you are doing with your son.
The only thing that i feel bad about is that his activity(airsofting)costs approx £20 so it would take him all month to save for that and does not give him any more money to spend on anything else. At the same time i think we are giving him enough!?!0 -

To be fair my son never moans when he does his chores and is not one to constantly ask which i believe is a rarity for a 15year old.;)0 -
My mum used to give me £20 every fortnight and my dad used to give me £10 a month. This was in addition to any money that I got from my nan though. It's not easy having a good time. Even smiling makes my face ache.0

I think average pocket money for a 15 year old should be zero.
Would that be the mean, mode or median average?Rational judgement, now, at this very moment.
Virtuous action, now, at this very moment.
(Wisdom, Courage, Self-control, Justice)
Willing acceptance - now, at this very moment - of what you can’t change0
