I give my 2 boys (14) £15 pm into their bank accounts, but I buy the phone top-up as and when needed, usually £5 every 6-8 weeks and I buy all their toiletries with the normal weekly shop. I also buy their clothes, although their dad buys alot of the home clothes and I buy school stuff.

One DS has oddles of money, both cash in his wallet and in the bank, my other DS is rather like yours and it burns a hole in his pocket, although he is getting better now he's realising that if he spends it on tat he's got nothing left if he wants to go to the cinema with his friends

My boys were on PAYG phones with T-Mobile and I've just switched them over to Tesco Mobile.

It's £10 a month for a SIM card, but you get £40 worth of credit (200 mins or 400 texts or a combination of both!). You can also nominate 5 favourite people and call/text them for half price. Once you've had the SIM for a month, you can ring up and cap the account so once the credit is gone, it's gone! It's all managed online, and you can log on and get a record of when they've been using the phone. Very handy as my youngest son just got told off today for texting friends when he was supposed to be in bed asleep

Just thought I'd mention it in case it's of any use to yours.
Here I go again on my own....

From the age of 12 I worked for my money - weekday evenings after school and all day weekends at a livery yard, all for £15 per week. Did me fine :).
  • Mine get £10 per month each and they are teens. When they realised no more was forthcoming they both got themselves paper rounds. They also have about £10 of mobile top ups per month.

I give DD £30 and pay her mobile £15 per month. Some months she has money left over, others (esp now theres a boyfriend on the scene) its spent week 1 but she knows theres nothing else.
The £30 has to cover social life, make up and any other extras like presents.
I havent given ds any money scine he started work a year ago, but he used to get £10 per week - I could never face giving him a monthly budget as it wouldn't last til the end of the day he got it.

My sister does this with her 5 kids but they all have little jobs. It gives them the responsibility and i will be doing this with my son when he is older.
He is quite good now as he puts all his money in his money box.
