I know exactly what you mean.

We have been looking at buying a bed and now the january sales are here i thought there would be some real bargains and there is none.
It really annoys me. Benson for Beds is a fine example, they advertised a bed at 50% off and it was only 60 pounds off down to 530. When only a month ago it was at 590.
They used a price of 1160 which it was apparently what it was recently. Really it should have only been advertised at what they REALLY reduced it from!!!!

It really gets my goat!! so many sales are just scams.

Why should we be bombarded all day on the news with drivel on the great bargains to be had

DFS and Dreams Beds are other blatant offenders, who offer sales on a permanent basis with 50% off. It is shocking that they refer this discount to a RRP that is over-inflated and would not have any purchasers anyway!

Got to agree it's too easy for retailers to claim large discounts that are simply not genuine. I've always been of the opinion that many sales are basically a con.

It's not always easy to help people see through the propaganda and consider the actual price they're paying now, rather than price it might have been when it was previously inflated in a few select stores.

Walking through the town today annoyed me with the number of huge signs claiming '50% off' or whatever, with 'up to' in tiny letters. They should be made to use the same size font for the 'up to' as the discount.
  • I'd suggest you always consider:

    Do you need it?
    Do you want it?
    Can you afford it?

If the answer to any of the 3 is NO, then don't buy it.
I am a Mortgage Consultant and don't like to be told what I can and can't put in a signature so long as it's legal and truthful.
  • I don't listen to the "reduced from RRP" nonsense anyway, they claim DVDs and CD's RRP is around £15, you never see them at those prices.
  • does anyone have an online code to use for bensons please?????

I couldn't agree more. Same with MFI (I know they're on their way out) et al.

    Regarding the post,

Do you want it, need it and can you afford it?....YOu don't always have to need something to justify buying it; treats can be nice. That;s what I use sales for; treating myself to (mainly CDs, clothes and house stuff) that I couldn't afford at full price or justify spending that amount on.
  • I saw the Bed we wanted which was half price I then asked for a better price even better given free delivery within 5miles from store.

Although gven free credit for 12months.

Blackhorse had the wrong delivery address on the agreement.
and if you pay off the loan early before the final date then you are charged extra. Watch Out.
