...can the nationwide take your debit card off you if you claim benefits even if you give them no reason to?
Generally all CC providers, Nationwide included, can do this: Credit cards terms & conditions 126kb :
    14. Closing your account
    (a) At any time during this agreement either you or we can close your account by telling the other. We will give you reasonable notice before we do so.

    (b) If your account is closed you must return all the cards we have issued on your account, cut in two, and repay everything you owe us under this agreement.
However, I never heard about any CC company doing this withot any reason.

  • I can't understand why you have to close and account to basically upgrade a card! I applied for a flexaccount just before Xmas - I'm going abroad in a couple of months and wanted an account with a cash card. Even with me saying I wasn't transferring my current account to them I was given a debit card and on saturday they even sent me a cheque book! This is with an account that has zero in it!

Some time ago a lot of flexaccounts (where cash card only was requested) were not credit scored and these accounts cannot be upgraded, the system simply doesnt allow it - hence a new application needs to be submitted for a credit score and a decision based on that (and the usual other factors). Nationwide no longer have flexaccounts that are not credit scored. Accounts that have been credit scored and a decision of cash card only given can be upgraded in the branch fairly simply if the account is older than 6months, and the useage has been within the terms and conditions etc - It doesnt guarantee a card however. Finally, requesting an upgrade puts another search on your files.
