Should I trust the RAC

Broke down Christmas eve, called out the RAC. Apparently the clutch has gone.
He's recommended a garage and said we wont get much change out of £500 for a new one from them.
The car's a Ford Focus
Seems a lot of money to me, what do you think.

It has been known for patrol men to "recommend" a garage in exchange for a number of used notes.

    My thoughts exactly david29dpo.
Any way's, taken taken it now, Quoted £460. But they are getting it back on the road today (Saturday) which is the main thing.

Most of the cost will be for labour, which could be upwards of £75 per hour depending on the garage. I know of one garage that charges £135/hour.

But there again, it's not a simple job changing a clutch, not really a DIY job.

Sounds about right. You've got to drop the front subframe off to do it - it's not a 1-2hr job - more like 6-7. If it's a TDCi, then it's actually quite cheap and I'd be questioning whether or not the DMF is getting changed.
  • Mr trustworthy RAC man eh?

Told my daughter the other week(when her front wipers packed up during all that heavy rain) that she needed a new wiper motor.

I just plugged the cable back in, wipers working fine

AA next although they probably are not much better

    Here you go..

now all you have to do is get it fitted at maybe at least £60 an hour.

People really do need to learn how to drive properly. My '92 Golf still has the original clutch on it and is closing on 100,000 miles.

They all have good & bad patrols!!

Worst I had was a rather irate call from a customer, who had lost all his diesel, from a leaking fuel tank, on an LDV400, in a busy central London street. The RAC relayed him beck to us, we couldn't order a new tank, 'till we confirmed which size he had, but were ready to get him back on the road, ASAP.

Actually didn't take more than 5minutes, once we'd re-fitted the fuel pipe to the tankj, he'd managed to rip off, while driving onto the building site, he'd been working on!!

So no leaking tank, annoyed, but satisfied customer, no house points for RAC patrol, but you couldn't really expect him to lay underneath a large vehicle, which was/had deposited 40 or 50 litres diesel, all over the Queens Highway!!

For what it's worth I've been with the RAC for about 30 years and called them out on numerous occassions. I've never been anything other than pleased with the response time or the service received.
