new to this home oil lark, just used 750ltrs in Dec and didnt have it on as much as i used to with gas, also all cooking in now electric instead of gas.
using it for central heating and hotwater
gas bill for last year was £400, projected oil will be £1200
flipping eck!
guess i need to read up on how to use oil more efficiently

i think the first port of call should be calling in someone to service your boiler... that sounds like a huge amount, even if you have a massive house.
in comparison, i use approx 1400L A YEAR to heat my house (3 bedroom terrace, so pretty well insulated, but still...)
is your house typically very warm? turning your boiler thermostat down to say 65-70 saves a LOT of oil - i keep mine mostly at about 65 unless the weather is really cold where i'll turn it up to maybe 80 to make it toasting for a week or so til the weather passes.0 -
At current prices of around 35p a litre, oil costs approx 3p per kWh.
So assuming the efficiency of gas and oil burners are the same, oil CH costs approx 50% more than gas - perhaps a little more if you get your gas much cheaper than 2p per kWh - bear in mind the standing charge or 2 tier prices. It therefore should not triple your fuel bill.
If you have used 750 litres in Dec, @ 35p that costs £262 and equates to between 8,000 and 9,000 kWh(depending on type of oil). That amount of gas would cost £150+
I think anyone using oil CH might be advised to look at Economy 7 for heating hot water using the immersion heater. Even without storage heating it might tip the balance in favour of E7. Obviously you would need to look at the figures.0 -
i have the heating+water come on for an hour in the morning, then come on in the evening for 5 hours at 65C for the storage tank and room temps at 22C, i have only the rooms that will be used ie 2 bedrooms kitchen and living room. the house is large and rented i will ask the landlord to service the bolier.thetope wrote:i think the first port of call should be calling in someone to service your boiler... that sounds like a huge amount, even if you have a massive house.
