After a reboot starts as normal but desktop goes to a pale blue colour, if you Ctrl-Alt-Del then task manager click on services tab then exit the original desktop is shown.

The IE home page has been changed to Acer but apart from that all seems back to as it was.

Do you reckon this was something nasty or something to do with the glitch that others reported on Vista?

OK.... clicked your link and downloaded to flashdrive.

Swapped to OH's pc put fresh copy of malwarebytes on his desktop, put the newly downloaded mbam-rules.exe on his desktop (the new download took under a second to download on his pc? is that ok?).
Installed both (tiwce), his malwarebytes still gives the database version as the old one. What am I doing wrong?

    Ok

You already have malwarebytes on the computer
    so dont install again
All you do is install the update file which will automatically update malwarebytes

Sorry. Just realised you got it running
Open HIJACK and FIX all of those that have (file missing) and (no file) in them

Looks ok to me though (Theyre just remnants of past problems)
