Thanks again, but part of the problem is that OH's pc won't connect to the internet so I can't update the malwarebytes.

Sorry aliEnRik, and thank you for your patience!

I've put the Malwarebytes and downloaded updates onto the flashdrive. I don't know how to get Malwarebytes to update when it's on OH's pc - it just tries to go on-line to do it.

Maybe I'm being thick (highly probable) should this update file be called somehting like 'update' and end in '.exe'. If yes, it's not there.

Yes it should. The link I sent is an .exe file ONLY
    http://www.gt500.org/malwarebytes/database.jsp
So you download said file to YOUR computer (Its called 'mbam-rules.exe')
Put it on the other (infected) computer and run the exe file. This will auto update Malwarebytes

    Thanks Browntoa.

There's still no internet access though did go through what you suggested. When entering the lines it said something about requiring 'elevation' so dunno what thats all about.

this is virtually identical to most of the problem but we can't find the 'blocked files'. Any ideas?

    Thanks!

OK.... clicked your link and downloaded to flashdrive.

Swapped to OH's pc put fresh copy of malwarebytes on his desktop, put the newly downloaded mbam-rules.exe on his desktop (the new download took under a second to download on his pc? is that ok?).
Installed both (tiwce), his malwarebytes still gives the database version as the old one. What am I doing wrong?

try this alternate bit of software , as you are using Vista you just to download to the USB drive , copy to the infected PC and then run

    http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/combofix/how-to-use-combofix

you should download ComboFix from one of the following URLs: it will produce a log file when it has finished that you need to copy to the usb drive and post here for us to read if there is still no internet on the other PC ( we may not be able to fix this until the infection has gone, wait until we think its clean and then fix the LSP as I posted above in post 28 )
