Hi Terry
I had the same problem about a month ago with PS3 failing to read disks, Games, Blu Ray or DVD and it was out of warranty. Found that a similar issue was happening with other users on the sony user forum and they had a helpdesk number to call.
I gave them a shout, they asked a few simple diagnostic questions and they arranged to pick it and returned it 3 days later at no charge. Just remember to back up any data to a usb stick or drive
Cheers
OMG - thank you so much. Can you tell me where I find the phone number?
Many thanks

con? no... specifications.
They did have a version that played PS2 games, but it was expensive and no one bought it... so they cut costs, and took out that compatibility, and made the PS3 that you buy these days.
It isn't a con, it is the specifications. I absolutely love my PS3, and don't give a crap about it not playing PS2 games, mainly on the basis of that I don't own any.
It's like saying, i've just bought a diesel car, and i can't use all this unleaded which is cheaper at the pumps.. (well kinda!)

Hi Terri
The number gaming_guy posted (thanks) was the one I called. I thought it was an exceptional service to be fair as I reckoned out of warranty there would be a charge, though I am sure someone will be along soon that will say it was what Sony should do anyway due to blu ray disk failure etc.
I am not a fan boy of any particular console as I bought a 360 in the meantime, its a good machine but I had jump through hoops with them to get the 1 month free Xbox live whilst Sony just took the call and sorted out the problem I had. I'm reasonably techie and I manage hardware for our customers and so wish that the service we provide would be as painless as the experience I had with Sony, the thing is I hadn't mod'd my console in anyway ie upgraded the HDD and just was truthful and pleasant with the person I spoke with.
Hope it works out as well for you
Cheers

When we upgraded to a playstation 2, it played all of the playstation 1 games.
I bought the first model of the playstation 3 with the larger memory, which cost me over 4 times as much. It does play most of the playstation 2 games.
Playstation 2 games are still being made, so it looks like for most people you need both a PS2 and a PS3 - crazy and very expensive. And no I don't think this is anything similar to buying a diesel car and expecting to put petrol in it. Also, a diesel car would not cost 4 times the amount of a petrol car.0 -

I believe it's a 60. My son said his friends have a lower memory than his, so if they only make two sizes, then my lads must be the 60.
