I already have the account so thats fine, and i have my salary paid into it each month, and recently after applying Barclays upgraded my card from cash card to connect - so they must be satisfied with the level of activity on the account and the way it is being managed too.
    Well done lad!
Since when has the world of computer software design been about what people want? This is a simple question of evolution. The day is quickly coming when every knee will bow down to a silicon fist, and you will all beg your binary gods for mercy.

To clarify: if you have a cash card account, it will always be a cash card account. If you get a Visa debit card, it is still a cash card account - it is just a full authorization card.

You will only have been upgraded to a "regular" account when you receive a new sort code and account number. There is no way to "upgrade" your cash card account to a full Barclays Bank Account and retain your original details.

Also what does floor limit refer to in terms of the connect card?
The floor limit is the amount a retailer can debit from your card without having to actually call the bank for authorisation - basically an amount your bank guarantees to pay the retailer even if your account is overdrawn. For example, if your floor limit is £10 and you spend £9 in Sainsburys, they could perform an "offline transaction" without contacting their merchant account provider.

It's sort of like a cheque guarantee but for card transactions.

Thanks, I was aware of that, when referring to the card being upgraded I simply meant only that, the cash card upgraded to a debit card and not an upgrade on the account.

When it comes to the card expiring will the replacement now always be a connect card, since i'm using that, or is it again subject to status each time the card is up for renewal?

The Visa debit card issued on the cash card account is not subject to status at all. If you can have an account with Barclays, you can have a Visa debit card - provided it is a "current account" type product and you are aged at least 11. It will re-issue as a Visa debit.

Many thanks for the clarification. It's good to get an answer from someone in the know. However it says on the Barclays website that debit card n the cash card account is subject to status.

Also how long have Barclays offered the visa connect debit card on the cash card account - would it have been available when i originally opened the account in 2006?

I'm confused. I see no mention of status on http://www.personal.barclays.co.uk/BRC1/jsp/brccontrol?site=pfs&task=homefreegroup&value=12866

The debit card is a recent thing, yes - it wasn't available when I left retail banking in late 2007/early 2008, so sometime in 2008 I would have thought. I think it's roughly along the same lines for telephone banking.

Since some people might be affected by this issue, I feel as though I should mention international payments on cash card accounts - the facility is not currently available, but it is under review. The reason it isn't available is because under our commitments to Universal Banking, it is possible to get a cash card account with very little ID (i.e. just benefits statements). This isn't sufficient ID for us to allow people to conduct international money transfers due to money laundering, terrorist trafficking concerns, etc. A work around is being looked at, however.

Thanks for your reply. I appreciate the risks which you face on the back of issuing an account with little ID.

on the page http://www.personal.barclays.co.uk/BRC1/jsp/brccontrol?task=homefreevi2&value=12854&target=_self&site=pfs it refers to footnote 2 next to debit cards for all Barclays accounts, so I assumed it was still subject to status for cash card account holders too?

Ahh, I only looked at the cash card page. ;)

The statement is more applicable for the accounts above the cash card account - they can be issued either with the "full" visa (full debit, cheque guarantee, etc.) or with the basic Visa. Or the cash card if someone really wants it.

However, neither the cash card account nor the cards there-on are subject to status in the traditional sense - you're pretty much only going to be turned away on fraud reasons or if Barclays has previously written bad debt off against your name.

Many thanks for the clarification. So to confirm when my card is up for renewal it will be a connect visa debit card, and will not revert back to the cash card as I originally had?
