According to the Barclays site: http://www.personal.barclays.co.uk/BRC1/jsp/brccontrol?site=pfs&task=homefreegroup&value=12866 , the customer could have a choice between a cash card or a Connect card (i.e. debit card). In addition, on the application form, there is check box to choose between a cash card or a Connect card.

Out of curiosity, I would like to know the following:
- why would the form have a choice between a cash card and debit card? I'm sure most (or even all ) customers would want a debit card
- According to this website, http://www.personal.barclays.co.uk/BRC1/jsp/brccontrol?site=pfs&task=homefreegroup&value=12854 , the Cash Account comes with a debit card as standard, as there is a 'check mark'. However, on the left hand side column called 'Barclays Debit Card', a number 2 is next to it. When I see the legend, it says 'Subject to Status'. What does this mean? Does it mean that the customer could either get a 3 in 1 card or 2 in 1 card depending on the credit score? I thought basic accounts are not credit scored? I thought they do credit checks to confirm your identity and addresses.

Plus, some people are obviously not to be trusted with a debit card: http://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/showthread.html?t=1373401- According to this website, http://www.personal.barclays.co.uk/BRC1/jsp/brccontrol?site=pfs&task=homefreegroup&value=12854 , the Cash Account comes with a debit card as standard, as there is a 'check mark'. No. A cash card account is subject to no checks other than electoral roll and checks for bad debts etc. A full credit check is not carried out. The only Visa that can be issued on the account is a basic Visa card with no floor limit and online verification required. What would William Shatner do?0 -
Could I assume that the Connect card for the Cash Accout can only be used at Barclays cash machines and post office only (i.e. card can't be used at other cash mahcines)?0

No, the Connect card is a regular Visa debit, just with no floor limit and required authorization. It can be used anywhere that a "full" Visa debit can. What would William Shatner do?0 -

I have a Barclays Cash Card Account with a visa debit card, but what does the floor limit refer to?
I previously had the cash card and then upgraded to the Connect Card. Also, when my connect card expires and my new card is due to be issued will the replacement automatically be a connect card rather than cash card now that i have a connect card assigned to the account rather than the basic atm card?0 -

Just go into branch, and say you want a Connect card with your Cash Card account. Just say you lost your ATM card.0 -

Thanks for the reply. I didn't make myself very clear originally.
I currently have a barclays Connect visa debit card on a cash card account(having upgraded from the basic cash card). however when this card expires will the replacement card automatically be a barclays connect card too and do Barclays run credit checks again and look at the account activity and how you have managed your money before deciding to reissue with a connect?0 -

After your card expires, your replacement card will be a Connect Card. Don't think they would do credit checks again. These accounts are not 'credit scored'.
Also, did you apply for this account by post or branch?0 -
Unfortunatley if you have lot's of adverse data on your credit files then the banks will decline you for a basic account, the underwriters can tell the difference between debt avaision, fraud and genuine error i.e un-employment etc so just beware of that.
Check your credit files, start with Experian as most banks only use them for checks.
Try Lloyds TSB but be honest with them - or they will put a CIFAS marker on your file. Also try Halifax Bank Of Scotland as they issue a basic account with a Visa Electron card.
Good luckSince when has the world of computer software design been about what people want? This is a simple question of evolution. The day is quickly coming when every knee will bow down to a silicon fist, and you will all beg your binary gods for mercy.0 -

When i applied for this it was in branch in 2006.
Also what does floor limit refer to in terms of the connect card?0 -

I already have the account so thats fine, and i have my salary paid into it each month, and recently after applying Barclays upgraded my card from cash card to connect - so they must be satisfied with the level of activity on the account and the way it is being managed too.0
