Hiya,
There's a drainage issue in our house. The drainage company want to charge us £28 an hour for a joiner, and £58 per hour for the "leak detection team"
This company was one of 3 that we were offered by our property management company. We have been so unsatisfied by the property management company that we formed a housing committee.
To avoid the exact issue of overcharging, we informed the property management compay that we were acutely aware of the:
1) downturn in the building industry,
2) direct effect that this would have on tradesmen's hourly rates.
The property management company came back with the usual "we always monitor prices closely" waffle...Then hit us with the above potential charges.
We think that it’d be better to get our own joiner, for 2 reasons:
1) He’d be cheaper.
2) He’d keep an eye on the drainage company, to make sure that they weren’t dragging the time out.
What do you think?
Is there somewhere that I can officially check the average joiner rate in the Glasgow area.We know a few joiners who have taken up to a 40% hit in their rates, but if we could find an official source, then that’d be better.
Many thanks, and merry Christmas J

£28 for a joiner is a fair price
by the time the joiner has paid his tax and national insurance, public liabilty, non chargeable time for his accounts, fuel and transport, tools to do the job.....do i need to go on!
i charge a little more than that per hour and come away with less than £19 per hour after expenses
i can work for a agency for £16 per hour and have non of the hassle of rouge clients, i wouldnt have to answer my phone 24hrs a day, nor would i have to give up my evenings/weekends to do quotes
do you go to work for nothing?Hi, we’ve had to remove your signature. If you’re not sure why please read the forum rules or email the forum team if you’re still unsure0 -
hiya,
Ta for the replies. If you think that earning £15 per hour is nothing, then you're insulting a lot of people, myself included...Back to the main issue..Is there anywhere I can find the official figure?
Thanks.0 -
there is no official figure for the self employed
what is the problem with your drainage and why do you require a joiner to be on-site?
if it is a problem internally a good multitrade plumber should be able to sort the issue along with any repair work to the building fabricHi, we’ve had to remove your signature. If you’re not sure why please read the forum rules or email the forum team if you’re still unsure0 -
I'd pay a joiner twice that an hour to come and hang the new front that is languishing in my hall cos everyone is busy "in the run up to Christmas"0

The standard hourly rate for an electrician in Scotland is around £32 per hour.
This is a reasonable rate for a joiner.baldly going on...0 -
what type of work will the joiner be doing, lifting up flooring, renewing joists if there rotten etc?0

He never said it was nothing, tradesmen are skilled and have done a lot of training to get to where they are. Would you expect a plumber or electrican to be less?
That hourly rate isn't that much higher than I'd expect an on call joiner to charge I'm afraid, and there is no official rate, self employed can charge what they like in whatever industry they work in
I would definitley get a second quote though, management companies are b*****s for ripping people off :mad:0 -
I pay my joiner £16/hour-that's in Dundee0

I think the question now needs to be: How does one become a joiner?0
