Does anyone know how I can restore my back up or tell me an alternative to use that is similar and where I won't lose the info everytime I reinstall?

A bit of Googling suggests that the "read-only" message may be misleading, in that it seems you may get it when Money can't find your .mny file. Have you checked in Preferences to ensure that the location where it's looking is correct?

If so, have you tried right-clicking on the file, choosing Properties and checking if it really is Read-only? If so, it should be possible to change the properties so that you have read and write access to it again.

Sorry to resurrect this thread. I have got Microsoft Money 2005 and it works fine on Vista, but that isn't my issue.

Firstly, if you still have your original file you can use that rather the backup. However, if you are using Vista then I suspect the problem is more to do with the update it needs to install before it will read previosu files (even if they are in Money 2005). The update should start automatically when you run Money. If you can´t open a previous file then try creating a new one. Don´t put any data in it, just create the file, give it a name like test. Money should then open and download the update (but you need to be in Administrator mode, even if you have the rights set up in your user name). Open Money by right clicking and selecting "Run as Administrator", creating the file above and wait for the download. Once its installed, close it and reopen. It should now be able to read your old file.

NB. You can´t download the update from anywhere on the net, it can only download automatically.I reinstalled Money a few weeks ago in Windows 7 and the download didn´t start automatically, so I just tried every day and it worked after a couple of days, so I suspect the update site was down.
