Officers Club (never heard of it), just gone into Administration

I went past one yesterday and actually said to my Mum that Officers Club and JJB sports looked terrible. Now I know why! Watch out JJB.0

I don't think I've heard of Officers' Club. I've seen the odd Whittards around and about, but not been in one....much enquiry having been made concerning a gentleman, who had quitted a company where Johnson was, and no information being obtained; at last Johnson observed, that 'he did not care to speak ill of any man behind his back, but he believed the gentleman was an attorney'.0

We have an Officer's Club in our High St, but as I've never been an officer I gave it a miss. Being on the small side, I naturally assumed it would be for tall men with big chests, and all the shoes would start at size 10. I expected stuff like double breasted blazers and ties with insignia that only other 'officers' would recognise. Apparently, it was not like that.
See, it was a carp name, immediately alienating many potential customers by sounding elitist. Officer? Nah, I'm just a ranker, as Woy Jenkins might not have managed to say. (I did love it when he talked about rancour!)0 -
Well, they DID go into administration last night.
However, they've been bought out over night and 32 of their stores will close today.British Ex-pat in British Columbia!0 -
Apparently it's a chain based in the North, big news on regional tv in the north east - can't say I've ever seen one though

I don't think I was listening to the news properly! Apparently their head office is in the North East - a few more jobs gone in the North East then, poor bu**ers"a workman, even of the lowest and poorest order, if he is frugal and industrious, may enjoy a greater share of the necessaries and conveniences of life than it is possible for any savage to acquire."0 -
Sometimes I'm embarrassed to say I'm from the North East but this made me smile. The Officers Club is the UK's leading independent fashion menswear retailer with 180 stores nationwide. Established in the North East, its aim is to bring quality and choice, at permanently reduced prices, to the UK menswear market.

But, on balance, there are more carp companies down south.
Maybe it's a bit like bagpipes. Invented by the French as a joke but the Scots haven't seen the joke yet. Oh and can we ban that awful song, Old Lang Syne, from being sung south of Berwick.
EDIT: Looks like it's based near Newastle (Cramlington) - explains it. That's North Northeast and I'm from central Northeast :rotfl:. Phew!

When our town heard the news they were queueing round the block in a panic to withdraw their troosers (ed: shurely life savings?)0
