Hello! I was wondering what do you take when driving /what is legally required to have with you when dirivng in your car.
Your tax (y/n)
Mot (y/n)
Proof that you own the vehicle (y/n)
Insurance document (y/n)
Driving licence (y/n)
I realise you need all of these to drive I just mean what you need to have on you/in your car if required.
Cheers!

must admit I only carry my licence- didn't think it was a good idea to carry mot/V5 incase car got stolen as the thief would have all the documents. It was my understanding that should you be pulled over by the police they would give you seven days to produce your documents as a police station.Duct tape is like the force. It has a light side, a dark side, and it holds the world together."

What happens if you're 400 miles from home and not planning to return in well over a week? (Playing devil's advocate).0 -

Definitely your road tax as it must be affixed to the vehicle (windscreen), everything else I would leave at home - as all the other docs can be taken into a police station within the seven days if you are stopped and don't have them with you.0

You just need your Drivers Licence & Insurance Policy.
You don't need MOT & V5, As the patrol can check all this before they decide to stop you using their 'ANPR' Automatic Number Plate Recognition.
The 'ANPR' is their bible and can check a number plate in about 6 seconds, If the warning bell rings in the patrol car then the officer will stop you.
I once got stopped randomly - The officer knew who I was, Where I lived and what MOT & V5 information I possesed when he walked upto the car.
The days of getting away with driving Uninsured/ Un Taxed are Long Gone now.
It's just a shame they (Police) are not as KEEN with all the other crimes they deal with?
They should have - 'PAR' Person Automatic Recognition, Which tells them if that person is a Burglar, Drug Dealer or even a Terrorist.Thomson 757 Man0 -

Your tax (y/n) car tax should be displayed full stop
Mot (y/n) not needed to have it on you
Proof that you own the vehicle (y/n) if you mean v5 then no, but surely if you own the car then it shouldn't be reported as stolen but the police can easily find out if you own it
Insurance document (y/n) yes i do
Driving licence (y/n) yes i do

i only carry 2 things on me when i drive0 -
I would say the minimum is:-
The tax disc on your windscreen (legal requirement)
Driving Licence (Good for I.D. if stopped by police)
Certificate of Insurance (Could save your car being seized if police data is out of date and showing no insurance.)0 -
Thanks for all the answers people!
Im going with the majority here and my own personal choice of now just having the tax displayed (as I know this is a must anyhoo)
While I agree the insurance and driving licence is a good idea, nowadays it does seem a bit of a worry carrying them everywhere.
And finally the V5 and MOT as most of you have now said can be left at home due to them being on a datebase.
So thankyou everyone for that insight! Cheers peopleDec Wins : Gold Leaf Necklace

you prioritise.
the police aren't going anywhere. sort it out when you get back, they're a pretty decent lot.;)Remember the time he ate my goldfish? And you lied and said I never had goldfish. Then why did I have the bowl Bart? Why did I have the bowl?0 -
Tax disc. Nothing else, there's no need to prove ID in this country. The police can soon tell if you're fibbing by checking your address, date of birth, licence type etc against their computer.0
