This will depend on the car and the manufacturer.

I have recently enquired about a Vauxhall, Listing at over £16,000

Offered out at £11700, including £150 with of accessories - not pre-registered but from stock.

If this is a physical stock vehicle, and not built to spec then you stand a greater chance of discount. (Thats why the Toyota has little off price - as most are built to order). you have to also remember that the manufacturing costs of the vehicle have not come down substantially, the only manufacturing cost saving is oil prices falling, and if the company has loans, the interest rate - so the actual vehicle cost is static, a dealership will have agreed to buy it at this price, the only discounts will be if the dealership is in fiscal problems, facing a penalty for non-sale from the manufacturer or is feeling generous. What is more likely is that the dealership will cut their profit margin down to the minimum if there is no leverage or incentive for the dealer to discount.

Also remember that a Retail price is not really the price - What Car Target is nearer, but in the current climate - that should be your starting point to haggle down from.

No point putting it in writing - face-to-face is better. You are in a stronger position, as the sales team can sense a sale, you can get a sense of your chances of adding optional extras and accessories - A piece of paper with your offer on might be selling yourself short and you could have haggled for more but because you have put it in writing you are negating that option. Blatently ask - "what did the car cost you?".

Dont buy on the first visit, call them afterwards and make an appointment for a return - this will make the sales member convinced of an iminant sale.

Its a good time to haggle as it is end of month, a dealer may be approaching a sales target - but I very much doubt it. More likely that they are holding too much stock and may have to repay a group buy discount to the manufacturer for non-sale (It was not unknown for a dealer to go all-out and buy - say 150 units a month in order to get a better percentage off the manufacturer - then hold on to them. Most manufacturers have wisened up and now re-negotiate the discount upon actual volume sales after the group purchase).

This is also a potentially good time to buy new/pre registered. In 3 year's time, after some economic recovery and market confidence people may be looking to then change their car for a 3 year old used one (it is cyclical - you tend to get new buyers, 3 year old buyers and 6 year old buyers) - where picking will be slim and limited to fleet, hire and motability offerings (those buying at the moment), so it should see an improvement in the residual as long as you choose sensibly - dont buy a typical fleet or motability car.

I was out last night and was talking to someone who works for Arnold Clark and he was saying that Golf TDIs (unregistered) were being sold for around £14k down from £25k. I can't confirm this of course and I haven't checked the price of TDIs but might be a useful pointer for someone.

£25k for a diesel golf. finally the world has gone mad!

there was a member on here who gave a recent example of the R32 going for £18k from £25k list, brand new etc etc.

still £18k for a golf, difficult to get my head around.

make an offer. don't write a letter, unless you have no other means of communication. worst thing they can do is say no, and go back to their computers.
Remember the time he ate my goldfish? And you lied and said I never had goldfish. Then why did I have the bowl Bart? Why did I have the bowl?

If you check http://www.honestjohn.co.uk go to Best DSeals page, you'll have loads of up to date, current, GENUINE offers.

Then get your local dealer to beat/match the one that you want.

At least you'll have an idea on the TRUE selling prices!!

a local citroen dealer was offering a £23k picasso with a £6k mini citroen free .
they are more interested in turnover and targets than profit
i don't know what would happen if you asked them to knock £6k off the picasso

Nothing, but you could easily get £4k if you don't want the second car.
