Barcelona Hotels

Can anybody recommend a hotel in Barcelona that is near to the sites etc and won't cost too much.
I've had a look on laterooms.com but not sure which is best district etc.
I am going 19th Sept for a couple of nights with my partner a I managed to get 2 returns with BMI baby for £40 each from Manchester a couple of weeks ago.
Any recs on travel from airport & what to see would also be appreciated.
Cheers
Gaz ;)

This site gives info re Transport

    http://www.tmb.net/en_US/turistes/commouret/commouret.jsp

There is a good Undergound system (air conditioned!) and bus network (all night buses). They are cheap, clean and safe.

We stayed for a week and I think you can get 3,5 and 7 days tickets that get you on the bus and underground.

We stayed in an apartment so can't comment on Hotels.

Transport from the airport can be by bus or taxi. I think the taxi fare was 20 Euros for two + luggage. Only takes about 15 mins.

    What to see?

    Sagrada Familia

    Casa Mia

    Other great buildings in Barceleona

    The Beach.

Possibly the Ramblas, but watch your pockets.

    Many thanks for that info
  • I stayed in the Novotel at Sant Cugat in May which is on the outskirts of Barca. It's medium price (£60 a night for a twin), clean, has a pool, modern and is near the underground (£1 to Playa de Catalunya - Las Ramblas - 45 mins). Last train back is approx 1:30am. First morning train is 6am. Taxi fare is about £30-35 if you can't get a train.

Las Ramblas is full of tourists and pretty manky to be honest. There's 3 Irish bars off the main drag but be careful of pickpockets. The Marina at the other end of Las Ramblas is canny. 4 pubs/nightclubs that are full from about 10pm.

Not sure about other areas of Barca but have been told there's better areas where the locals go.

I visited barcelona for a weekend in may 04

    recommend following

    eats
La font de prades – traditional catalan food - on mont juic within Pueblo Espanol

La fitora – seafood restaurant  on the seafront – straight down from las ramblas or parrallas

    drinks
irish bar - on seafront (around the harbour)
plenty of other bars/nightclubs with flyers for free drinks always being handed out

    to see

Barcelona fc stadium – nou camp (if you like football, very impressive 100k capacity)

Mont juic – great views of all round barcelona, cable car to and from harbour

Pueblo Espanol – located on mont juic, a collection of different styles of buildings, transported form around spain to one place

nb this my 500'th post........ too much time on my hands... he he ;D
smile --- it makes people wonder what you are up to.... ;)
  • I booked on https://www.hotels.com -Very reasonable prices.

Stopped at the hotel ambassador. £60 per room 4* on the Ramblas which is slap bang in the centre.
Am i here to save money or spend money......hmmmmm
  • Can you not get any cheaper accomodation in Barcelona. My husband & I are hoping to go later this year, but don't want to spend £60 per night.

I was hoping for something nearer £40 - am I just dreaming?

Went in June 04 and stayed at Hotel Condado which is in the business area. However we could walk to the Ramblas in about 20 minutes and there is a tube nearby. The rooms were basic but had everything and were relatively cheap. We booked through expedia and had no problems.

Would recommend the tourist bus (two routes, tickets valid for both). We book tickets for two days and you can visit all the sites and just hop on and off the bus as necessary. They run every 10 minutes up to about 8.30 pm.

Found an excellent restaurant (recommended in several guides). £15 for both of us to have a three course meal.

Were totally ripped off by a restaurant in the Ramblas. They quote a price but beware tax is not included and puts the price up a lot.

Please, please be aware of pick pockets and several areas not to be ventured after dark. However we had a GREAT time.
No Matter what you do there will be critics.

One of the most convenient hotels for location is Regina just off Placa de Catalunya. Bus from airport stops at other side of square. Not cheap - £90 a night but we got three nights for 2 so down to £60. Internet not always cheapest try Crystal, Cresta brochures from travel agent - lots of offers and you can book accom only.
Very good restaurant opposite University is Domestic - very cheap good food. Also all the fish restaurants in Barceloneta are good and cheap.
    Nice to save.
