The poor man might still lose his arm. Nobody deserves an attack like that! Even if he doesn't lose his arm this nightmare will always be with him.

I don't understand the mentality of pet shops selling toys for dogs to chew which are labelled "postman's leg". I suppose they are joke/novelty items but they do trivilise this issue which must be taken more seriously.

I see the two dogs involved were put down - shame that the owner didn't think to have them under proper control in the first place.

I wish next door would stop putting their dog out on the street to look after itself. It is a lovely wee dog, but shat on my drive yesterday. Of course that's nothing compared to the postman who was attacked. Everyone who chooses to have a dog is responsible for everything that their dog does. I wonder if the owner of the two rottweilers will end up in jail.

My dog hates the postman/delivery man we have an outside post box now. But she never comes to the door with me she is always put in the study. However a few weeks ago she did see a new postman, went mental and while he was up someones drive posting mail my dog sniffed at his bike which then fell over. The postman went mental and started shouting very rude things to me and the dog and then ran towards my dog and me. Needless to say that really didn't help and my dog was just lost the plot, luckely I was able to get her under control again. Since then she has been walked using a halti, mainly because I have excellent control over her with it on. I have no idea why my dog reacted like that previously she has walked past postmen no problem, she just hated them coming to the door. But he made the situation much worse, I had already sorted out his bike.

Watch the Dog Whisperer, he did a special show for Postal workers, on how to approach dogs and behave around them.
If you google it, you can watch online.

Your neighbour can be reported and fined/prosecuted(?) for not haveing control of their dog ina public place - you can't just turn them out into the street to do their business!

One of the rotties had been run over in a van by the guy trying to rescue the postie so there wasn't much to do put put him down. The owners had the other destroyed at the same time. A shame, but you couldn't trust them again.

I'd go with the avoid dogs if possible suggestion as well - mine is one of those who wags her tail right up to the second she jumps and snaps - no growls, or other warnings. If you're up on doggy language you might notice she's looking a bit scared/submissive, but most people haven't got a clue.
What are the post office guidelines on entering a garden with a dog in it?
All shall be well, and all shall be well, and all manner of things shall be well.

Pedant alert - it's could have, not could of.
  • Hi thanks for all your comments its all taken on board. My dog is lovely and soft but he hates our postie so ive learned to look out for any "signs" when im at work from other peoples dogs
If theirs a dog in the garden i wont go in unless the owners about or i know the dog well.
Royal mail say that if theirs a loose dog in the garden dont go in but its not often i come across that situation its usually people opening the door because they see me coming and the dog runs out.

Actually the so called Dog Whisperer had it all wrong in that episode, I wouldn't advise anyone to follow the advice he gave - such as turning your back and walking away.....
Please forgive me if my comments seem abrupt or my questions have obvious answers, I have a mental health condition which affects my ability to see things as others might.
  • My dog would go for anyone that used to wander down the path, paper boys, postie's, etc but obviously if we had to open the front door, the dog was locked in another room first. If I was walking my dog down the street and bumped into the postie, she would be as friendly as you like and roll over, etc so it must have been a territorial thing. Still had to be carefull though.

My dogs now just bark if they feel like it but most of the time just can't be bothered. Shih Tzu's are lazy dogs :)

I wish my round had been like that - there were feral dogs EVERYWHERE it was a nightmare! and the ones that weren't feral were always really angry, hunry and badly trained cos they were kept for "protection"

We Can't say that - Because we were not there - So we don't know the FACTS do we?

The dogs might have been under control, But sadly something went VERY wrong?
