Help on setting up new DVD player with new TV

Hello

I have just treated myself to the Panasonic TH37PX80. Quite superb.

To go with it I have now got the Samsung DVD - 1080PK.

This link.

http://fwd.five.tv/gadgets/audio-video/video/dvd/samsung-dvd-1080p8

I hope its the same model, as the link refers to P8 and not PK.

Has anybody got any advice on the best set up with the TV. I have got an HDMI lead.

Should I let the player upscale, or the TV?

Any other recommendations?

Cheers

The tv would 'probably' be better, as Panasonic upscale software tends to be pretty damn good
Use a THX setup disc to set Contrast and Brightness
Set reds manually so that everything looks 'natural' (No Red/orange faces etc)

Also, the screen size is 768. Which ment if the player DID upscale, the tv would STILL have to scale up or down (depending if you set to 1080 or 720), meaning it would have to be scaled TWICE (once by the Samsung, and again by the Pan). So id set to Sd and let the Pan do the scaling.

What alienrik said, ir try it with the TV upscaling and try it with the Samsung upscaling and see which looks better.

Try doing a search on avforums as well, see if anyone there has the same setup.

EDIT: is the Panny actually 768 as according to their website the screen is 1024 x 720 pixels?

If it IS 720. The you need to upscale the Samsung to 720P (NOT 1080P). but of course still try in Sd as well

Yep I saw that but on the Panasonic site it specifically states 1024 x 720.

I use a Virgin V+ box with mine and use that to upscale to 720 and the picture is fab. The V+ boxes are supposed to do very good upscaling though.

Thing I found is. it makes a difference over 'time'
I have a Pioneer 42". tried upscaling with my PS3, my pioneer dvd player and using SD
I found upscaling to be marginally better
HOWEVER, thats when id first bought it. I believe in BURN/RUN in personally (As ive found it first hand)
And after a year of watching upscaled. i decided to try 2 months of SD. After a couple of days (If memory serves correct) the image sharpnened RIGHT up. It blows the PS3 and dvd player away for upscaling now (Bare in mind I also use an isotek Mira mains conditioner and 16 core braided mains cable)
So maybe try again after 6 months or so?
(And I appreciate the fact that Pioneer have THE best upscaling software so might not be the same on the Pan')

Do you have one Bill? Id so what does the manual state? (ive know 'official' websites get things wrong sometimes!)

  • IIRC the 37" is 720 and 42" is 768

    I've got a TH37-PX80B, just checked the Panasonic siote again, the 37" is listed as 1024 x 720 and the 42" as 1024 x 768.

I do need to play with mine again, I've had it a couple of months so it's had a reasonable run in period so a play with the settings may be in order next week sometime.

EDIT: Interrestingly just found this on Avforums in an email someone had form Panasonic

"In response, I would explain that all input signals are converted to 1080p for processing because of the same FHD chip set used in all 2008 TV sets (both HD and FHD sets). The 1080p signal is then reduced for 720 or 768 line screens i.e. HD Ready PX80 sets.
The PZ8* models would display the signal at 1080p since this is their native resolution; the use of a universal 1080p chipset helps to maintain an affordable price for our products. The up/ down conversion process (on PX80) does not degrade the image quality."

So if you have a suitable device (Blu-Ray or pS3) it may be better to output at 1080p
