Vote for E-Petition to explain Credit Crisis

The UK Government used clandestine and secret means to freeze £550M of sterling assets in the UK banking system during the recent Icelendic crisis. This lead to instability and lack of confidence in banks lending money.

The UK court papers related to this action are sealed and not viewable for UK voters or tax payers...........wouldn't you like to know what's in them and what the possible catalyst was ?

Therefore if you feel motivated - vote & support this No.10 E-Petition to find out - only takes 2 minutes of your time :

(a) Did the Uk government act rashly ?

(b) Is the UK Government & Treasury hiding the truth ?

Are these the assets that Iceland wanted repatriated so that they could have the money for themselves and reneg on their liabilities to UK depositors? Please explain?
  • Nope these are assets that belong to UK people - like me who want to know why my money is frozen by the Uk government.

I'm supporting and have signed the E=petition as a UK Taxpayer...and basically want my money back...rather than tied up in a tug of war between Iceland & No.10...for political ends.

To sign this petition I would need much more info and explanation. As I understand it the Icelandic people held a meeting when their banks were collapsing and in the words of their prime minister decided it was everyman for himself and that they would act in the interests of Iceland to protect their incomes, pensions etc and that others countries could look after themselves in respect of the Icelandic banks liabilities. That is why the assets of the Icelandic banks were frozen. To say that they can instantly become UK property, instantly sold and the money out paid seems naive and ignores all the legal problems.

Err, your money is being returned to you by the FSCS, in part because the UK assets were frozen. What more do you want?

  • You've answered your own question - more info is needed to find out why the UK Government took its action.......hence why the UK Public should know whats in the sealed court papers.

You & I have a right to know what is in those papers that "triggered" the crisis.........is that too much too ask from the Government & Treasury ?

Not sure if I'm on the same page here, or even reading the same book, are you perhaps suggesting the UK government should have done nothing, allowed Landsbanki to repatriate all funds to Iceland and then began a "tug of war" from that position?
Hope for the best.....Plan for the worst!

Alas as yet I am unable to open the book or even get access to the library, using your analogy, the Uk Government is saying "You can't come in - your name is not on the list"

You are unable to open the book as you say yet you have concluded what it says. Why not a simple freedom of information request although I imagine in view of possible legal challenge by the Icelandic Gov't there are good reasons why a lot of legal information is rightly confidential?
