Council house

Hi

Not sure if this is the right place to post, I have a friend who is pregnant and also has a toddler.

Shes leaving her husband due to various reason and applying for a council house. How many bedrooms would she be entitled to?

Also after calling Shelter shes been told as she is making herself homeless she may not get a council place unless shes leaving her partner due to violence, is this right?

I agree with a 2 bedroom flat/house, although she won't get a 3 bedroom. Also she will definately get a place if it's through domestic violence because of the kids, it happened to me.

It must be different in whatever council you are in. I left an abusive relationship and was told I would get no housing help for because I made myself intentionally homeless.

Still better for her to leave than put up with the situation though.

I am going to send you a link to my site about abuse.

She won't be entititled to anything more than a one bedroom place (if that) as the baby she is carrying doesn't count.

Yes a refuge will help and also help towards rehousing her but it may take a while.

She will because she has a toddler who will eventually need her/his own room

this is true most councils don't take into account the pregnancy. If the toddler is under 2 they could well put her in a 1 bed. Above the age of 2 she will get a 2 bed, most certainly not a 3

No, it doesn't work like that. I know of several people (including my neice) in one bedroom places (and some with no bedrooms) who have partners, toddlers and are pregnant.

The baby won't count until it's one year old.

Most councils take the view that the parent can use a bed settee and doesn't need a separate bedroom.
