    Oh no, not Laura Ashley....

I'm just guessing, it's not based on any evidence. I always thought that Laura Ashley was overpriced and catered for a very small, specific niche which I can't imagine is that lucrative in these days of 'reinvention, reinvention, reinvention'.

As for Waterstones (and other High Street booksellers) I am guessing that they have seen a lot of business diminish in the face of online competition from sites such as Amazon and Play which offer books at far less cost (although not as satisfying as actually browsing in a good old bookshop).

Currys and Comet might go, if the rumour mill is correct. Where will we all get cheap fridges from then?

Not quite in administration - yet

  • I have fond memories of the High Street Kensington branch in London - I used to go there regularly to get freshly ground coffee for my late husband when we lived in London. It was a beautiful shop but once the supermarkets started selling the vacuum packed ground coffee, he preferred that and we never went back.
  • I will be gutted if Waterstone's goes, as I live in the sort of grim provincial town where the only bookshops are Waterstone's and the Oxfam shop. Although Amazon is much cheaper, you can't browse, pick up books, and look at them online. I would really miss an actual bookshop.

As for the rest of them, I don't care. Laura Ashley do actually do nice party dresses but I really don't need any more of them.
