I have also heard of laws in France that protect indie stores....I believe that rents are capped for niche retailers. The hypermarket concept was in France before it spread to the UK but the laws protected bakers etc.

There are lots of rules protecting retailers in Europe that reduce competition and increase prices for consumers. You get a nicer High Street but you do pay for it and you have no choice but to pay for it.

where I live - Cambridge- we had a retail park open up about 4 years ago. From left to right, I think, there is Curry's, PC world, Boots, Argos, sports direct, halfords, dorothy perkins/evans, furniture village, habitat, MFI, Homebase. MFI closing has left an odd hole, Habitat look like they are struggling, OH is certain Homebase are in trouble, I think at least 50% of that retail park could go.

I will miss The Pier. I always enjoyed mooching/ shopping there.

Not sure why they should owe West Ham United £389,020.53

Can be found under trade creditors towards the end.

That's just the problem, isn't it - we all have one of those retail parks with name for name the identical shops, within a few miles. We've probably got 5 within a 20 minute drive.

I'd love to have a range of shops, as we find on our biennual trips to visit in-laws in Spain - hundreds of little cafes/clothes shops/homewares/shoe shops etc etc.

    So much more exciting shopping.

And not expensive (well, it wasn't before the pound collapsed, anyway....).
  • so we'll pretty much have tesco left then when all's done....great! (I'm being sarcastic)

    Waterstones?

I hope so. And Borders. I'd love to see the return of independent book sellers, run by people who love books.
  • Well I would too, but I fear that where I live it wouldn't be replaced by a bookshop at all, and I'd be left with Amazon.

If there was an independent bookseller here I would shop there.
