That was Hartlepool. Supposedly they hung a monkey as a French spy. They deduced it was French as it couldn't speak English!

How can you use June 1980 Tories had been in for just 1 year and still trying to undo the labour mess that they left the country in.

As far as I remember Thatcher doubled inflation in her first year :D

Like I say then check out what happened after a couple of years of sorting out the labour mess - it was 3.7% by 1983 and stayed under 10% (apart from a couple of months in 1990 when it was 10).

Obviously apart from Aug - Oct 1990 when it was above 10%.

    Inflation June 1980 = 21.9% (conservative).

I can give credit to Thatchers reforms of unions, taxation and privatisation, but anyone who thinks that she had a good record on inflation is deluding themselves.

I started work in 79 just as Maggie came to power and remember very clearly that I benefitted from a payrise of around 15% in my first few weeks. This was to try and redress the fact that the outgoing labour party had imposed a 'pay freeze' for the previous 3 years and the country was in the horrendous position of having their industries controlled by unions refusing to modernise and streamline. Thatcher had her faults, the main one being her manner but she at least had the b@lls to tackle the issues and take the medicine that was required to get the country back on track, something GB sadly lacks. It's no shock to me that the 10 years of steady growth came on the back of a Tory administration, funny how the reverse is never true.

I was wondering why the vote on this thread was 80% for the tory earlier this morning but has now gone down to 55%. Then I thought well it was started at 0830am and I suppose Labour voters dont get out of bed till lunchtime!

  • This is why I would applaud the introduction of an eligibility test to determine whether one has the intellectual capacity to vote.

    I really hope you're joking.

You did selectively quote inflation under Labour of 23%, ignoring the fact that they had reduced it to around 10% when Thatcher took over.
