Ive never been over to that part of the site, thanks for the link to that thread.
Obviously its easy to say how the benefits system "should be", its a lot more complex in real life. I just remember what a joke it was when I signed on (between 1993-1995, maybe things have changed). I didnt want to work at that age, I was doing 1 part time A level per year, and getting benefits. Myfriends were unemployed too, so we just loafed around every day. I would go to sign on every two weeks, and if they asked me what I had done to find work, I would give them a list of made up companies that I had applied to! The DSS would occassionaly call me in for an interview to see what could be done, and I would just say my ideal job was a Forrest Ranger, because I knew they would not be able to find me such a job!
After 2 years of loafing around, the novelty wore off, so I went to uni 95-98, and have worked ever since. Cant imagine being unemployed now. If I was made redundant, I certainly wouldnt advocate being forced to work for my dole then, thats for sure!0 -

Here's a bit of trivia and well off topic:
Those uniforms were designed by two British designers! And the founders of Adidas made the boots too!0 -

They were produced by Hugo Boss, but the Army officer's uniforms were initially designed by British designers...I don't know who did the other branches. However, a few years back a catalogue from the British designer's in question was up for sale on ebay - it was dated before the war but was sent out to officers on a yearly basis. With the outbreak of war I would imagine that the those designers lost their contract LOL!
As usual I can't find the linky that carries the info as I read about it many years ago. So you're free to take what I've written with a pinch of salt.0 -
Have you seen that Mitchell and Webb sketch with the two SS Officers, and the one says something like "hang on, we're dressed in black, with a deaths head skull on our caps....are we the bad guys?"!!0

Sadly you choose to ignore the context of the Thatcher government; the preceding Labour government had brought the country to its knees; the 3-day week, garbage uncollected in the streets, power cuts, the all-powerful unions holding the country to ransom. We were known as "The sick man of Europe", and it needed fixing.Gorgeous_George wrote: »People remember the pain of the last Tory government. Despite all the problems, we have never had it so good as we have over the last 10/11 years.
The Tories will forever be associated with Margaret Thatcher. They say time is a great healer and it seems that adage is holding true for some. How we forget.
GG
And it was painful for some; lots of people lost their jobs (though the benefits system was still in place to support them), and interest rates rocketed.
But by the end of their time (and TBH, they had probably run their course), the country had improved beoyond recognition.
The current Labour government then inherited a healthy set of books, and a vibrant and growing economy.
They then proceeded to tax us more and more, and fostered an economy based on the assumption of endless credit underpinned ever-increasing house prices.
The house of cards has now come tumbling down, and it looks like it will be down to the Tories again to clear up the mess.
For me, the main difference with the NuLab as opposed to the run of the mill political half-truths and sleight of hand is that they have looked you straight in the eye and promised things with deep sincerity, that they have then reneged on, time and time again.dimwit,
I look forward to seeing the fox hunting toff boys come in to power and make things worse. (btw "We have a government who lie and cheat" has been the case since the inception of party politics)
That is what sets them apart.
You would have to be a dimwit not to recognise that.0 -

The problem is that Labour has also betrayed the rest of us.The problem is that voting Blue Labour is the same as voting Conservative. It reminds me of the end of Animal Farm, where the animals couldn't tell the difference between the pigs and the humans. Labour has betrayed its constituency.0 -
politicians are a bunch of liars, politicians lie.
If you think a different one with a different coloured tie is going to do what they say then you've not been paying attention."Gold is the money of kings; silver is the money of gentlemen; barter is the money of peasants; but debt is the money of slaves." - Norm Franz0 -
