Replace Boiler

Actually, I am a bit embarrassed at this post, but grateful for any help.
Our boiler is elderly and consistently fails inspection checks because there is something wrong with the vent (no idea, I have never understood what the nice man says, but apparently it is wrong and I can't fix it) although otherwise sound. I keep hearing clunking noises, but if I was that well worn I would clunk as well.
It looks like our house move is going to be put off so I would like to get a new boiler fitted for our benefit and for HIPS when we finally can move.
But I don't know what questions to ask or where to start looking. The house has four beds, three receptions and do we need to get new radiators? At the moment there is not one overall control thermostat of the heating and we cannot have hot water on independently of the heating - will we have to keep that or can it change? Are there sites where you can work out what you need?
This is why this site is so fantastic - I just don't even know anything about the thing and I am sure that someone can help me out on this, if only to point me in the right direction.
Any help very gratefully received.Ankh Morpork Sunshine Sanctuary for Sick Dragons - don't let my flame go out!0 -

Good afternoon: An excellent place to start is this guide from the Energy Saving Trust: after you have a handle on the current regulations and your heating options then contact a RGI recommended to you by a source you trust for a quote. When you have a quote, post the details on here and other members in the trade etc. could comment (also a thorough trawl through the threads will be helpful as well).

Thank you so much for this - as you can tell, I really need a 'heads up' for where to even start. Without this board and the kind people on it like yourself I would be lost.Ankh Morpork Sunshine Sanctuary for Sick Dragons - don't let my flame go out!0 -
Hi all,
Looking for a bit off help and advice please.
just got a quote in to replace my old combi boiler with a new one.
the quote seems fair to me, but would welcome any advice on the Vokera Compact 29HE, is it a good choice or should i ask for another model ?
I live in a 1 bed flat which has 4 radiators.
Would really appreciate any help available.
Many thanks in advance.0 -

Good evening: This boiler is Band B, has a two year warranty and seems to be flavour of this heating season for bargain basement installations. Get a quote for a Vaillant, Viessmann or a Worcester Bosch( from the CDi range)...use a RGI who can offer an extended warranty (preferably 5 years) on one of the aforementioned brands.
But remember, a boiler is only as good as its installation and annual servicing....a cheapy install not up to manufacturer's specifications or Building regs often means trouble further down the road.

P.S. You've had a good response on DIYnot.Ask to see CIPHE (Chartered Institute of Plumbing & Heating Engineering)0 -
Thanks for your reply,
I'll contact my installer and ask them to quote me for another model.
Cheers for now,

Hi,
I'd appreciate some advice on whether a quote for £7,000 to install an oil-fired central heating into my mid terrace cottage is reasonable.
This figure includes everything - tank and base, pipes into house, 6 radiators, boiler (I live in tan area that doesn't have gas, and I only have old storage heaters at present.)
Many thanks!0 -
sorry, I forgot to say that it's a 2 bed cottage, open plan downstairs and kitchen extension out the back...0

Hi folks,
I've just received a new quote to replace my old combi boiler with a WB Greenstar junior 24i.
Is this a good model to go with ?
The installer has informed me that it comes with a 5 year warranty.
Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated.
Many thanks in advance.0 -
Hi folks,
Sorry the boiler quote on my previous post should have been for a WB Greenstar 28i, not 24i as i posted before.
Would appreciate any help or advice with this.
Is it any good etc ?
Thanks in advance.0
