I can so identify with this! Quite apart from the lupus and all the attendant stuff that goes with it, I have bad social phobia, and cannot use the telephone at all. Even if I wish to call my best friend, my husband has to place the call for me and establish that she actually wishes to speak to me before I can talk to her. I often don't leave the bungalow for days on end, and because my husband works full time, I spend many long hours alone. Without the Internet, I think I'd go stark staring mad. I have to admit, I'm not brave enough to use instant messenger. It's a bit too "immediate" - I like to say my piece and go away, and not have to reply to someone instantly.
