Entitlement to LSA on UK course, possibly GYH ?

To claim LSA you have to be away from your unit for a period of 10 days or more
if at any point you return to your parent unit then you start the 10 days again!
it would be better for you to claim LSA while you are on course even if you do buy a house as it will probably be more
then when you return to unit then start claiming GYH
Pads have to pay for food when on course unless PAYD.....not accomadation
The big thing about JSP's are that they are open to interpretation...so what one unit might do another will not do(I have seen this first hand)If you find yourself in a fair fight, then you have failed to plan properly
I've only ever been wrong once! and that was when I thought I was wrong but I was right0 -
Thanks to all those who have posted so far but what are the actual rules for claiming LSA on UK courses and do course personnel get charged for food and accommodation in addition to their current charges ?
Let's get this sorted, once and for all. Does anyone out there know what the JSP says?
Clerks/Writers, help us out here!!!!!!:DNothing is foolproof, as fools are so ingenious!0 -

JSP does NOT give an definitive answer as I said in my previous post.....hence why it is different for each person because the RAOWO's interprete differentlyIf you find yourself in a fair fight, then you have failed to plan properly

I have too, also have experience of them refusing to pay out even when we have the relevent jsp info. Ours was related to DA. We are RAF and I even managed to speak to AFF and the manager there said she was willing to speak to our clerk to say yes we were definitely entitled as the army do pay out for this and with it being tri service now all should be the same.. they never did pay out though.
Its all open to interpretation from what ive seen.. and a lot depends on what side of bed your clerk got out of that morning!0 -
heres a good one
there are two teams where i work....Team one went to germany for 5 weeks and weren't allowed to claim anything other than IE as they were told they could come back every weekend (hohne to tidworth in cars)
My team went to telford were allowed to claim LSA....and IE because we weren't told we could come back at weekends
on one deployment we were working close to one of the lads own home.....he tried to claim the 20odd pound you can claim for staying at a relitives house the RAO said no because it was his own house (rightly so you might say)....So what they did was pay 110 a day for 3 weeks for him to have an empty hotel room...very money savingIf you find yourself in a fair fight, then you have failed to plan properly

In an organisation as large as ours with rules and regulations for everything, we are handing out (or in many cases - NOT handing out) millions of pounds in allowances based on an individual's interpretation of a wooly JSP.
I would like to think that all clerks/writers would interprete the rules to the advantage of the Serviceman claiming, but from my experience, this certainly isn't the case.
I have a Civil Servant and various contractors working in my unit, and funnily enough, none of them appear to encounter the problems we do when we make a claim.
The only way round this that I can see, (and I will certainly do this next time) is if you feel seen off, or are getting a different allowance to others in the same situation, is to raise either a QOR or a Service Complaint to seek a concise definition of the rules.
Wish we could give HOORA a better definition of the rules than this, but as is apparent from the posts on this thread, the rules are not easily definable.:(Nothing is foolproof, as fools are so ingenious!0 -
Thanks TT and to all - hopefuly a friendly Army clerk who is switched on and screws the nut for the lads will pop in to answer.
I find it difficult to believe this is open to interpretation - perhaps its just ignorance or jealousy of money the adminners arent getting (incl civvies).0 -
Hello
apologies for posting here but the clerk seems unhelpful in my unit regarding answering questions that may involve money claims.
Im about to be going on a 4 month course in the UK, 145 miles away from my current UK establishment which is PAYD. The course location is not. I am in Z Type OR3 in current unit and will be in Z Type but unknown class in course unit. I do not want to be charged food and accommodation - I will provide my own food rather than be charged while on course. You will be charged Food and accommodation for the place you are on the course, not your PU. "Opting Out" of paying for food at a non-PAYD location is not possible, unless you find (and pay for) your own accom too. The only way you can get anything back is to put in a leave application for the weekends. Dont forget to claim your fiver per night IE.
I am also hoping to buy a house in the next 2 months.
Am I entitled to LSA as the clerks have said I need to prove my entitlement before they will enter it on JPA and there is nothing on the joining instructions. You will only get LSA if you are unable to get home during weekends/stand-downs. LSA is usually only for detachments to different theatres, but is occasionally granted for UK-UK dets when you are working weekends too. As it is a 4-month course, I very much doubt you are working every weekend, so GYH would be your permissable allowance.
Secondly if I buy this house it is 153 miles from my current unit and 104 miles from the course location.
What am I entitled to while on course? You will get GYH for 153 miles until you purchase the house, then 104. On return to your unit, you should register the property with your HR who will then start your GYH mileage from your PU to the property, if you continue to live in.
Can I claim GYH or Council tax reduction in addition to LSA or instead of - what is better? GYH - Yes. Council Tax is a personal responsiblity, and the best you'll manage is a 25% discount from your local authority.
I am due posting at the end of the course and dont want to have to explain all of this to new clerks or worse have to pay back public debt.
Thank you very much.
See my bits in bold. HTH.0 -
With IE - you can of course only claim for the nights you are away and not those when you return to your normal residence at weekends.I am NOT a mortgage & insurance adviser - or anything to do with finance, that was put on by the new system I dont know why?!0
