Tesco, Tiscali or someone else?

I currently have broadband with BT paying £66.36 per quarter.
The package I have, according to my bill is 1MB 15mb - I have no idea what this means!!!
As a total non techie, I am looking about for a cheaper alternative and THINK that Tesco or Tiscali may be cheaper than I have already - but I'm not sure if they are for the same packages!
Anyone using Tesco or Tiscali at the minute that knos what any of the above means!!
Or any others I should look at?

Hi, The 1MB is the speed that your broadband is.The bigger the speed the
quicker the response. The 15mb sounds like the monthly maximum amount of
data that can be downloaded.
I would not recommend Tiscali, you will/may have problems migrating from then
with regards to the MAC code.I also knowof ex users of Tiscali who were not
impressed.I haven`t a clue what Tesco is like.
I personally am with Demon and I am paying about £20 a month with a
speed of 2Mb and no cap on how much I download in a month.I am very
pleased with Demon.0 -
I would have thought 15mb a bit low for monthly quota. Perhaps this should be 15Gb?
Totally agree about Tiscali. Would not recommend.
If you don't hammer the internet with massive downloads and P2P services, check out Plusnet Broadband Plus account (http://www.plus.net). £14.99 a month for a 2Mb connection speed and unlimited usage. Well it is unlimited for surfing, email, chat, voip but is restricted for P2P. Seeing as you are already using broadband, you can migrate for free (with a MAC code) and you don't need any additional hardware. Have been with them for over 2 years.0 -
I have been with tiscali for 2 years, I've never had a problem with them. I am paying £14.99 for 1mg unlimited BB, but I'm actually getting 2mgWork like you don't need money,Love like you've never been hurt,And dance like no one's watchingSave the cheerleader, save the world!0

In theory yes that is true - in reality not really.
I've read elsewhere that the maximum speed of a webpage download is 125kb/s or thereabouts.
The response depends on the "ping" times from your connection to the server so faster is not the way to view this.
I've been on broadband since late 1998 (overseas) and the most important criteria for me is the UPLOAD speed.
We have Tiscali (512K down/256K up - 30GB caps) here which is certainly very reliable and no complaints so far. (I have read about lots of people complaining about Tiscali but at least 3 other friends have it and have no complaints either).
The difference "in reality" between a 512K and 1MB (or any other) connection is the BANDWIDTH.
It simply means that the "bigger" or "faster" connection can cope with more traffic at the same time.
If you are browsing the web then it is unlikely that you will exceed the bandwidth required even with 256K connection.
The main rule to remember is that you are only as fast as the slowest point in the conenction. That means if you are browsing a site with heavy traffic you might be just as fast browsing with a 56k modem.
This is the same with downloading files if the servers are heavily loaded.
I'd recommend getting the largest bandwidth available for the lowest price (preferably without any data caps!!!) and a minimum of 256K upload speeds.0 -
I have been with plus net for over a year - no problems. Not sure what all the techie stuff is about but you could take a look any way.

Hi, I've been with Tesco for 12 months now and have no complaints whatsoever (and I'm on the net most days for several hours at a time). I'd certainly recommend it for unlimited downloads @ 512kbps (I opted for 1mb but it appears my local exchange/phone line can't cope with it) for just £17.97 pcm.
However, I too had considered Tiscali - more or less the same service for £3 per month less - until I read the comments of a few disatisfied customers. Now, I'm undecided. I might just see whether Tesco will price match Tiscali but either way, i'm thinking better the devil you know...
Besides, that old granny in the skip on the Tiscali adverts creeps me out. Much prefered the pig farmer...

I think youll fine its a 2Mb line throttled back to 1Mb. Try http://speedcheck.ispconnect.co.uk/iwanttosave wrote:I am paying £14.99 for 1mg unlimited BB, but I'm actually getting 2mgillegitimi non carborundum0 -
Thanks everyone for your comments/suggestions/warnings.
Will look at the other sites mentioned and decide from there.
