Have I been scammed?

  • Is it not a crime to use someone's address for dodgy purposes? Surely it may effect the credit rating of the property? How would you feel if it happened to you? It is an unnerving feeling that someone has chosen to use my home for some kind of scam, even if it was selected purely by sticking a pin in a phone book. It is worrying that perhaps, one day, someone will not believe that I am not 'dear Julie' and start demanding recompense for goods.

It certainly is strange goings on, especially as its deliveries from differenet companies. The key would be to find one of the companies who will help and give you the IP address and email address for the person creating the orders. I doubt you'll get the credit card details but you might get the billing address.

I'm still puzzled as to whats going on here, and I've seen a lot of attempts at fraud in my time.....

There is no Julie Greenwalt listed anywhere in the UK on the electoral roll.

Credit ratings are per person, not per property, so you're safe there.

I certainly agree, it must be very disconcerting. I think sometimes, people who aren't bothered by this sort of thing fail to take into account that other people are bothered.

Well if someone does start sending bills to julie at your address you can ignore them. As hard as it is to do this, I suggest returning letters, etc, unopened without opening them and worrying about the contents.

They can't prove it's anything to do with you (mostly because it isn't anything to do with you) so their 'demands' can easily be added to the list of things that are not your problem.
If you don't stand for something, you'll fall for anything

I wonder if some scammer tried to set up a re-direct for that name at the OP's address, and messed it up. I think that is or used to be a fairly common component of some scams, obscuring the people who hope to receive the ill-gotten goods.

I'd thought of that, but they'd stop when the first one or two parcel didn't get redirected, and why send flowers, beauty items, not ipods and phones?

Abigail - out of curiosity can you tell us the other companies, do you know any of the other items that you refused?
  • The most recent item was an introductory parcel from a book club. Three parcels were refused at the door - they were small enough to fit in the postie's bag so I didn't see what they were. Two letters were refused unopened. I haven't opened any of the items - because they're not addressed to me.

I thought it might be a scam gone wrong - someone sending it to a random address in order to intercept the parcels not knowing that I'm a childminder who's home most of the time and knows most of the delivery guys round here!
  • Well - some good has come out of the worrying business. I've tightened up the security on my PC, changed all passwords (not just used the same one all the time), updated to mega internet security etc. All things I should have done ages ago but didn't quite get round to it. I took me ages to sort out my eBay account that had been scammed - I spose it's all linked somewhere.

I'm a bit of a 'write lists in my head and do them later' kind of person!

Abigail, as you're in 'security' mode, check the electoral register to make sure yours is the only name (plus any other genuine occupants) for your home address.
