    It's not my life, either.
Have to say, I'm not exactly overly concerned, though.
...much enquiry having been made concerning a gentleman, who had quitted a company where Johnson was, and no information being obtained; at last Johnson observed, that 'he did not care to speak ill of any man behind his back, but he believed the gentleman was an attorney'.

Three words (or is it two?): long term fix.

I'm still amazed by the fact that it's considered completely normal in the UK to have two year fixes. Elsewhere in the world you fix for (most of) the term. Same thing with tracker mortgages. You buy something that is probably the most expensive thing that you will ever buy and you just hope that you can remortgage at a reasonable rate after the two years or that you tracker won't blow up in your face. Mind bogglingly risky.

Its very very hard to get a good long term fixed rate.

Even if you see it advertised try getting it approved they will just say last min "sorry that was isnt available but we have this one whicj looks just as good but actually there are hidden cost that will cost you loads" etc.

Whats the best rate you can actually get approved these days?

Personally I think theres good and bad things about all cities, towns and villages.
In cities generally no one cares about each other and In villages everyone gossips about everyone else.

Just one thing I would say about London............I dont think it should have been awarded the Olymipics(poisoned chalice) and as for saying "The whole country will benefit" who are they trying to kid???

I dont even think most of London will benefit and please, please, please nobody mention "Lottery funding" Please, ive asked really nicely....

It will be like an actor mentioning the "Scottish play" by name..:rotfl:

A couple of years ago the 'best place' in the UK to live was 'voted' as being... Winchester. Now I have lived there and it has its' charms... but I am from London and it is in my soul. I was reading last night about the history of where I work adn I just love it. I would not want to live anywhere else. I understand why other people don't want to live here and that is totally fine, but I woudl agree re life views- living and working here, I see much more diversity and tolerance. One of the main reasons I would never live in a 'small town' or very 'white middle class' city again is because if I were to have children I would worry that they would absorb those narrow minded attitudes that the people there don't even realise they own.

And actually it's totally possible to work your way up to a 'nice' lifestyle by the time you have 30something children! Why wouldn't it be? If I (on a decent salary with no money issues like getting into 70k debt etc) cannot save and spend wisely enough so that I can be comfortable in 30 years time from now then what is the world coming to? OH yes- it's because in order to have a nice life you have to either be getting something you're not entitled to, be some kind of 'don't know your'e born' upper class idiot or get it all on credit. God forbid you just work for it and buy stuff you can AFFORD!

I live in Cheshire but think London is a great place and would love to have all the places it has on my doorstep.
whenever i go i really hate to come back to Cheshire as the pace of life is just so slow plus we dont have the arts and museams like london or for that matter we dont have much at all apart from some lovelly countryside and its nearness to wales..
It is nice to see the value of your house going up'' Why ?
Unless you are planning to sell up and not live anywhere, I can;t see the advantage.
If you are planning to upsize the new house will cost more.
If you are planning to downsize your new house will cost more than it should
If you are trying to buy your first house its almost impossible.

I agree having been born in Cheshire and now live in neighbouring Staffordshire. Some lovely countryside and villages but no buzzing nightlife to speak of.
I love Covent Garden and all those great pubs within walking distance especially the ones serving Belgium beer on draught like Leffe and DeKonick(spelt wrong - obviously been drinking too much of it!) - along with good British real ale of course.
The last time we were there we followed a pub trail which took us through Soho and back to Covent Garden. It was a New Years Eve and there wasn't a mugger in sight. I don't remember going to bed that night! Happy days!!!
