Am I?
mmmmmm lets see. Its a stated fact by the met police that 85% of muggers are black.
In any population a certain percentage are gonna be nutters. The denser the population, the more chance you have of bumping into one of those nutters.
Following the above, you have much more chance of bumping into a nutter in London, than the village inbetween w.yorks and lancs where I live.
There is also much more chance of being mugged in laaaandaaaaaan.........

Personally, I don't put immigrants and gun crime in the same catagory.
The streets here are incredibly clean and tidy, far more so than any village I've been to. The rubbish is collected twice a day, and there are street sweepers daily....much enquiry having been made concerning a gentleman, who had quitted a company where Johnson was, and no information being obtained; at last Johnson observed, that 'he did not care to speak ill of any man behind his back, but he believed the gentleman was an attorney'.0 -
There is not one single part of London that isn't grotty. Whilst it might not be grotty for London, get outside of London to a rural town like mine and you'll see it for the dirty smelly litter and graffitti ridden hole it is. The problem is you've become desensitised to it so you don't see it anymore. You need to take a fornight away from it living somewhere better and then you'll notice it when you return.
Central London isn't at all dirty, smelly, or litter-ridden, nor have I seen any graffiti for ages....much enquiry having been made concerning a gentleman, who had quitted a company where Johnson was, and no information being obtained; at last Johnson observed, that 'he did not care to speak ill of any man behind his back, but he believed the gentleman was an attorney'.0 -
London is no different from any other big city. People gravitate towards big cities because of employment and social advantages.
I've lived in central London for 10 years, prior to that I lived in New Zealand - which is unpolluted and green. NZ is the same size as the UK but only has 4m people, so lots of space for everyone. But small population brings limited opportunities and small world views.
If I spent my whole life in NZ (or a small UK town) then I'd have a far more restricted view of life - like a horse forced to wear blinkers. I see it with some friends who have never experienced living elsewhere - they hold racist, homophobic & sexist views despite never having met black or gay people or socialised with many women. They fear the unknown and react by criticising things they have never experienced. Of course, not everyone's like that, but it's a lot easier to be like that if you stay in your own little cacoon.
London is polluted (not bad compared with many other cities), there's graffiti (not enough!), mice and rats (which exist in every single city in the world), etc. So what!
It has the advantage of having the most diverse range of people you could ever meet. For most people, the employment opportunities are much better than any place in the UK. The entertainment opportunities are virtually unlimited - thousands of films, plays, pubs, clubs, lectures and so on to choose from each week. see http://www.timeout.com/london
Sure, some people fall victim to crime - but it's all relative to population size. The chances of me being mugged are similar in any UK city. I've never been mugged in London and don't know anyone else who's been mugged.
I do like to get away from London sometimes:
- go camping in Cornwall and enjoy the countryside
- spend a 30 min train ride and go walking: http://www.walkingclub.org.uk/
- get a train somewhere up north for a weekend of cheap beer
- get a budget airline flight to hundreds of destinations from London's 5 airports
You can have a 4br house with garden/garage if you live in poorer areas or live a bit further out -- you can reach hundreds of towns via short commuter train services from many stations. Sure it'll be more expensive than in North Wales, but wages are higher in London.
Wherever you live is a compromise of different things. Live where you like but stop whinging about where other people choose to live!

You must be blind to it, especially the graffiti.0 -

Harlesden, Walthamstow, Peckham or even Kings Cross at times.
But there are some very, very nice areas that far out number the bad parts.0
