Indeed, my husband was talking about the economy with a friend of his recently. And was surprised when his friend told him he and his wife were alright because prices haven't dropped in their area, a grotty part of south London. The thing is they bought with 100% IO in 2006 and MEWed in late 2007, so I guess they just have to keep believing it or they would break down.

And yes the price matters to them as it's a tiny flat and they want to start a family in the next few years.

Sounds like a 'head in the sand' total disaster is waiting for them just round the corner.
  • Which particular grotty bit of SE London?

Prices may be higher in WC1, it's still grotty though.(it is by my standards anyway). I suppose the rats are different, like pink with white spots in the posher part of town.
  • WC1 isn't grotty, it's a great place.
...much enquiry having been made concerning a gentleman, who had quitted a company where Johnson was, and no information being obtained; at last Johnson observed, that 'he did not care to speak ill of any man behind his back, but he believed the gentleman was an attorney'.

Thats what you think........ If it makes you happy, then carry on dreaming.

I actually believe you are seeing your environment through the rose tinted spectacles of a barrister.

Most places are actually rather nice to live in, when you household income (or flat-hold income!) = that of 2 barristers.
  • Not really, I've lived here for 11 years, since I was 19. Most of that time, I was studying.

What do you dislike about it?

  • It would be more appropriate to ask what I like about london. The answer would be 'absoloutly nothing'.

although i especially dislike the rats, the property prices, spivs, and illegal immigrants.

I have a good degree, and could probably earn much more in London. Would not dream of moving though. Would rather earn much less here, and live in a decent sized HOUSE with gardens front and rear, 4 bedrooms and a garage.
  • Fair enough, each to his own. I'm not trying to persuade you to live in London. But it's hard to see how Bloomsbury could be described as "grotty" by any stretch of the imagination, and "overpriced" or "expensive" doesn't translate to "grotty" IMO.

There is not one single part of London that isn't grotty. Whilst it might not be grotty for London, get outside of London to a rural town like mine and you'll see it for the dirty smelly litter and graffitti ridden hole it is. The problem is you've become desensitised to it so you don't see it anymore. You need to take a fornight away from it living somewhere better and then you'll notice it when you return.

The trouble with rural towns is they are full of parochial people with no regard for anyone but their immediate neighbours and a fear of anyone who lives more than a mile away!

And those trendy london dwellers are so full of concern for the rest of the world.......

Immigrunts, stabbings, gun crime, begging romanian mothers, NCP, litter, graffiti so prevelant its thought of as art, rats etc etc.

    Londons lovely aint it?

I think generali is another seeing life through rose tinted specs....

Stone and underneath spring to mind.
