Broadband, including modem and router?

Hi i have just got myself a wireless laptop. So i'm gonna need a broadband modem and router.

Where is the cheapest place to get broadband?

Is it cheaper to get a modem and router from somewhere else or getting it all thrown in?

Not looking for mega download limits as we only really surf and don't download anything. Responces will be thanked!

Thanks Neil

You don't say if you are looking for a cable connection or adsl.

If the former the cable modem comes included so just a router if required.

If the latter then it would appear you already have a wireless modem/nic and just need the router.

Regarding the actual broadband provider the cheapest in general don't offer a wireless router included.

IMHO I'd buy the router (wireless) as opposed to havuing it included to keep costs down :)

  • I have a bt line at the mo and i have a dial up connection with fast 4 which incidently i have no connection problems with! I thought that the routers were quite expensive so thought about getting it for free would be good! What is a modem/nic? Who is the cheapest provider? If i did get a router i would want the modem and connection for free if poss. Any recommendations?

As Fedz said ("who's motorcycle is that..... fedz, fedz dead baby" - sorry little Pulp Fiction play on words, couldn't resist), anyway........... you are unlikely (not gonna happen) to get a wireless modem / router from an ISP as part of the package.

You need to buy an Wireless ADSL Modem/Router, cheap ones go for about £55 - £60 (have a look at the site below for options:

    http://www.ebuyer.com/customer/products/index.html?rb=15281394036&action=c2hvd3N1YmNhdGVnb3J5X3BhZ2U=&subcat_uid=477

The other thing you need to consider is where is the Wireless router going to be positioned as you will obviously need to run a phone cable to it. Also, you will need to buy some ADSL Micro Filters (splits the voice frequency and the data frequency down the phone line), again buy them from someone like Ebuyer as they should only cost a couple/few £££ each (ISP's may look to change much more for them).

You then need to ensure you read the "Wireless" sticky thread at the top of the "Techie Stuff" BB thread to ensure you make your wireless network secure.
