I remember when Maersk went to Southampton....I was made redundant because of it.We made it! All three boys have graduated, it's been hard work but it shows there is a possibility of a chance of normal (ish) life after a diagnosis (or two) of ASD. It's not been the easiest route but I am so glad I ignored everything and everyone and did my own therapies with them.
Eldests' EDS diagnosis 4.5.10, mine 13.1.11 eekk - now having fun and games as a wheelchair user.0 -
And that is why more workers are getting more disillusioned with their own union and certain sections are talking about dropping them.
If they leave the union they would be stupid as they would lose all the other benefits.
In this recession there is nothing that the union can do except back the company otherwise who knows what the outcome would be.0 -

"Unite, the UK’s biggest union, has today (Thursday) been left reeling at the news that Dubai Ports World in Southampton is to implement its plans to make 41 compulsory redundancies as a result of the downturn in trade through the port.
Unite has presented the company with a series of proposals aimed at maintaining employment for all members at Dubai Ports World, however all have been rejected out of hand by the company.
Although trade in the UK port industry is suffering due to the downturn, Unite believes that Dubai Ports World is using the current economic downturn to force through redundancies and threaten further casualties in the industry.
Brendan Gold, Unite national secretary, said: “We will not allow an international port operator to make compulsory redundancies and ignore our stewards’ proposals. It makes the consultation process a total sham.
“I have asked to meet the company at a senior level to resolve this issue. Management should be under no illusion our members are very angry. They are prepared to do all that is necessary to protect their livelihoods and working conditions up to and including industrial action.”0 -
The only reason that Felixstowe docks is still running is entirely down to H&S. They haven't had any work for months but get around this by shutting the whole docks down for a week whenever the breeze exceeds 1mph because the RTG drivers !!!!!! their pants and go crying to H&S that it's too windy to do any work. This then gridlocks the entire length of the A14, half of the A1 and most of the M25 for the next week thus making it look like they're actually really busy and have more 'traffic' than they can handle.

You obviously don'tknow much about the way unions work mate
And the outcome, accordin to the blog, will be 250+ forced redundancies:eek:0 -

That where you are wrong, they came before and tried to stop us getting in to work but they did not stop us then and they wont stop us now.
If Unite told us not to work we would kick that union out and get a sensible one in.
There is no way that any of us would go out on strike to support another PORT, we will just win even more of their work and make Felixstowe safe.0 -

Mate, hate to break this to you but you don't personally get to make the decisions, it's a group thing:D
Anyway, I for one will be watching developments with interest and let's wait and see who does what to whom shall we? :T0 -
Wkki'd Trade Union and got this:
A trade union or labor union is an organization run by and for workers who have banded together to achieve common goals in key areas and working conditions. The trade union, through its leadership, bargains with the employer on behalf of union members (rank and file members) and negotiates labor contracts (Collective bargaining) with employers. This may include the negotiation of wages, work rules, complaint procedures, rules governing hiring, firing and promotion of workers, benefits, workplace safety and policies. The agreements negotiated by the union leaders are binding on the rank and file members and the employer and in some cases on other non-member workers.
These organizations may comprise individual workers, professionals, past workers, or the unemployed. The most common, but by no means only, purpose of these organizations is "maintaining or improving the conditions of their employment"[1].
Just wondered pickles mate, if you have 250+ forced redundancies, wouldn't you want other Unite workers to come out in yr support?
The idea is all about all for one and one for all not all for pickles and pickles for himself:D0 -
When pickles gets his P45 from the docks he'll have to stop posting nonsense on here about everything being hunky-dory with the economy and house prices. It shouldn't be long now...
Fatpig, mate, I think it's ok to pull someone up for telling porkies but relishin their soon to be unemployment looks a bit tacky man:rolleyes:
Can yer tone it down a bit?:D0
