Companies cannot announce redundancies too specifically or too far in advance.
I know from experience that some female members of staff realise that this might be a good time to get pregnant.

Yes I do, in fact I was born in Felixstowe in my parents front bedroom in a house just off the sea front.
We made it! All three boys have graduated, it's been hard work but it shows there is a possibility of a chance of normal (ish) life after a diagnosis (or two) of ASD. It's not been the easiest route but I am so glad I ignored everything and everyone and did my own therapies with them.
Eldests' EDS diagnosis 4.5.10, mine 13.1.11 eekk - now having fun and games as a wheelchair user.

Lets just hope forced redundanies dont happen to soon!! if the port dont get the 200 volunteers needed what will teh next step be?
At the moment the Port has only options open to Volunteers and at this stage are not looking to make any redundancies.

Not that long ago. I remember women joining the quayside workers, they never did actually join us in the lashing work. One of our resident jokers made a complaint that a woman tug driver was staring at his &rse when he bent down to pick up the twist locks.Told her that this sexual harassment !!!!!!!! was a two way street.

I'm sure you read different documents to me.
  • I'm hearing that there may not be enough volunteers. My 'man in the know' suggested the company might be willing to give workers a years sabatical on 25% pay. Now, if I were still a docker, I'd be looking that word up, it's not a euphemism for 'shafting' is it

This is on the table but the employee can return at any time earlier if they so wish. This seems an excellant chance for people to try other things without risking their own future at the Port.
There are several people considering this option because it would allow them to try travelling or to try their hand at a different Job.

I should have written no compulsory redundancies.
  • There are times, without doubt, that the Port of Felixstowe is shown to be an outstanding company to work for. Dockers moan, I've moaned myself on many occasions, but we know which side our bread is buttered. For the employer to make an offer like that, is outstanding. Let's not forget, we're only labouring types - . Full marks to the Port of Felixstowe, I'm sure when things improve we will see the end of the rainbow appear at number 2 gate.
