Baths

Any advice on which type of bath is best, long-term, plastic, metal or enamel?

thanks

Metal baths conduct heat away from the water, so your bath water won't stay hot for as long as plastic. But plastic ones are cheaper in construction and won't last as long. Mine is stone cast resin, which is also quite common. It is v heavy resin, so looks good and is hard wearing but is warm to the touch and so keeps the water hotter for longer. Having said all that though, I still think old reclaimed metal baths look really lovely in a bathroom. It depends on your priorities really. And your budget of course.

    yes...I'd agree with that.
Although I prefer the metal baths myself, I think they are better quality and don't scratch as easily as the plastic ones.
When fitting metal baths, I offer to fit insulation around the bath to help keep the heat in there.

Thanks you two. Are "reclaimed" metal baths the only sort available now then? I've had a look in Wickes and they only seemed to have plastic. Is this stone cast resin easily available?

You need to venture further than wickes to find a metal bath Ellie !!! :rotfl:
If you goto a proper plumbing merchant or bathroom specialist you'll find a greater selection to look at.
Steel baths are available everywhere(except wickes), cant advise on reclaimed baths.....not been asked to fit one.

Have a look here and see if this is what you want. Bath Tubs

  • If you want to stick to high street, Homebase do a couple of steel baths, but I'd follow Robowen's advice and go to an independent.

Thanks Rob, glad I brought a smile to your face!!

I tell you what I REALLY want, but cant find anywhere, is a bath like the one we had in a house we stayed in in France the year before last. It had a really nice, comfy, sloping bit for your head/neck. Any ideas?

Hmmm, spoke to friend who had a new bathroom installed last year. She had a succession of metal baths that went rusty  and ended up with an acrylic one................ Any ideas why this would happen and how to avoid it?
